Chapter 8 - The Confrontation in the Rain

The heavy iron gates of Maplewood Manor groaned as they slowly swung open, allowing the Maybach to glide forward three feet before stopping right in front of Julian and Eleanor.
The rear window rolled down smoothly, revealing my face behind the dark glass.
Julian dropped to his knees in the muddy grass beside the driveway, his hands clasped together like a beggar pleading for scraps.
"Sienna!" Julian sobbed, rain pouring down his face, mixing with his tears. "Sienna, my love! Please... look at me! I was wrong! I was arrogant, foolish, and blind! My mother forced me to give you that agreement! I loved you, Sienna! I swear I loved you!"
Eleanor stepped forward, her hands shaking, her voice high and desperate. "Sienna... sweetie! I was just testing you! I wanted to make sure you were strong enough to join our family! It was a test, I swear!"
I looked down at both of them from the warm, dry luxury of my leather seat.
"A test?" I repeated softly. "Eleanor, you demanded three thousand dollars a month for the privilege of sleeping in your son's house. You called me a lowly corporate drone. You treated a human marriage like a rental agreement."
"I was wrong!" Eleanor wailed, sinking into the mud beside her son. "I'll give you the house! You can have the four-million-dollar house! Just don't let them take my Julian to prison!"
I leaned forward, my gaze locking onto Julian’s trembling, broken face.
"Julian," I said, my voice cutting through the sound of the falling rain like cold steel. "When you got down on one knee two months ago, I thought I was marrying a man who valued love over money. But you were just a small, insecure boy hiding behind a silk robe and a fake corporate title."
"Sienna... please..." Julian wept, reaching out his hand toward the car door, but a security guard instantly stepped in front of him, blocking his reach. "Give me one more chance! I'll work for you! I'll be your assistant! I'll clean this estate!"
"You're not qualified to clean my estate, Julian," I replied flatly. "My seven maids have integrity. You have none."
Sarah Vance stepped out of the passenger side of the Maybach, holding a blue-bound legal portfolio.
"Julian Sterling," Sarah announced loudly. "This is your final notice of debt liquidation. Apex Capital Partners has taken full possession of Sterling Logistics, your residential property at 142 Maple Drive, and all affiliated personal assets. You are officially bankrupt."
Sarah pulled out a second document.
"And this is a federal arrest warrant."
From down the road, the sharp, wailing screech of police sirens cut through the rainy air. Three silver-and-blue police cruisers pulled up behind the Maybach, their red and blue lights flashing wildly against the wet trees.
Four uniformed officers stepped out, moving quickly toward Julian and Eleanor.
"Julian Sterling! Eleanor Sterling!" the lead officer called out, unclipping heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for federal financial fraud and tax evasion. Hands behind your back!"
Eleanor let out a blood-curdling scream as an officer pulled her arms behind her back, snapping the cold steel around her wrists. "Julian! Help me! JULIAN!"
Julian didn't fight. He offered no resistance as the officers forced him to his feet, pulling his arms back, the steel clicking tightly against his wrists.
He looked at me one last time through the rolling car window—his eyes filled with a terrifying realization of everything he had thrown away.

"You had everything, Julian," I said quietly as the window began to roll back up. "You had my heart. But you preferred three thousand dollars."
The glass rolled up completely, sealing out their screams, the rain, and the flashing lights forever.
