Chapter 9 - The Reclaiming of Apex Capital

One month later.
The morning sun broke through the clouds over downtown, flooding the 50th-floor executive boardroom of Apex Capital Partners with golden light.
The long mahogany table was surrounded by thirty senior board members, managing directors, and institutional investors representing the largest sovereign wealth funds in the world.
At the head of the table sat a high-backed leather chair that had remained vacant for two years.
The double doors of the boardroom swung open.
I stepped into the room wearing a tailored white Alexander McQueen suit, a diamond brooch pinned to my lapel, holding a leather folio. Beside me walked Arthur Pendelton and Sarah Vance.
The entire boardroom stood up simultaneously, clapping and cheering as I walked toward the head of the table.
"Welcome back, Chairman Vance!" the board members chorused warmly.
I took my seat at the head of the table, resting my hands on the polished mahogany surface. The room settled into an attentive, respectful silence.
"Thank you, everyone," I said, my voice confident, smooth, and powerful. "For two years, I took a leave of absence to observe our market investments from the ground level. That sabbatical is officially over."
I pressed a button on the executive console in front of me, activating the massive digital presentation screen behind my chair.
"Today, we announce the restructuring of our logistics portfolio," I declared, bringing up the new organizational chart for Sterling Logistics—which had been officially renamed Vance Global Freight. "We have purged the corrupt upper management team, paid off all outstanding debts to vendors, and installed an ethical, experienced leadership team."
Marcus Vance stood up from his chair, raising his coffee glass. "To the return of our rightful Chairman. May Apex Capital continue to flourish under her vision!"
"To Chairman Vance!" the room cheered in unison.
After the meeting concluded, I walked to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of my office, looking out at the sprawling city below.
Arthur Pendelton stepped into the office, placing a thin legal file on my desk.
"A quick update regarding the legal proceedings, Miss Vance," Arthur reported. "Julian Sterling has entered a mandatory guilty plea to eight counts of felony fraud. He was sentenced this morning to twelve years in federal prison without the possibility of parole."
"And Eleanor?" I asked, looking down at the bustling streets fifty stories below.
"Eleanor Sterling received a three-year sentence for her involvement in the offshore tax accounts," Arthur added. "Their residential house has been sold at auction, and the proceeds have been donated to our family's educational foundation."

I smiled softly, feeling a deep, profound sense of peace wash over my soul.
"Thank you, Arthur," I said. "That will be all."
