Chapter 2 - The Emergency Room Vigil

The hospital smelled of bleach and collective anxiety. I sat in the pediatric ICU, holding Lily’s tiny, limp hand. She was hooked up to an IV, her pale cheeks slowly regaining a tint of natural pink. The doctor assured us that the Benadryl and sedative mixture was leaving her system, but the psychological trauma would take time to heal.
Marcus returned from the hallway with two cups of untouched coffee. His knuckles were white, his jaw tight. "The police just finished taking my statement. Your father is trying to blame Vanessa, claiming she was the one who administered the sedative. Vanessa is singing like a canary, blaming your mother."
"They are rats abandoning a sinking ship," I whispered, my voice thick with unshed tears. "All these years, Marcus... I thought they hated me because I was an unmarried mother at nineteen. But it was about the money. Grandfather left everything to his first great-grandchild. They knew Lily was the sole heir to the family estate."
Suddenly, Lily’s fingers twitched. Her eyelids fluttered open, dark and unfocused. "Mommy?" she whimpered, her voice a fragile thread.
"I’m here, baby. Sunshine girl, I’m right here."

She looked at Marcus, then back at me. "Aunt Vanessa gave me the bitter juice. She said if I went to sleep in the big box, Santa would bring my birthday early. But it was dark, Mommy. It smelled bad."
Marcus knelt by the bed, kissing her forehead. "The dark is gone, Lily. You're safe now. And nobody will ever hurt you again. I promise."
