Chapter 8 - The Sentencing and Closure

The sentencing hearing was a somber day. The judge didn't hold back.
"In my thirty years on the bench, I have rarely seen such callousness disguised as familial respectability," the judge declared, looking down at my parents and sister. "For the sake of greed, you attempted to sacrifice an innocent four-year-old child."
My father was sentenced to twenty-five years in maximum security. Vanessa received fifteen years for child endangerment and conspiracy. My mother, identified as the mastermind behind the financial fraud and the attempted kidnapping, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
As they were led out in chains, Vanessa screamed at me to help her, to think of Emma.

I stood up, holding my head high. "Emma is safe with her father's relatives, far away from your poison, Vanessa. And as for you... you can spend the rest of your life thinking about the waste you left behind."
When we walked out of the courthouse, the sun was blindingly bright. Marcus pulled me into a deep, breathless embrace. It was finally over. The shadows of my past were locked away forever.
