Chapter 4 - The Arraignment Drama

The county courthouse was swarming with local reporters. The "Perfect Suburban Family" scandal had made the front pages. I walked down the corridor holding Marcus’s hand, refusing to hide my face.

Inside the courtroom, my parents and sister stood in orange jumpsuits. Stripped of her pearls and designer blouse, my mother looked haggard and ancient. Vanessa was sobbing openly, while my father stared blankly at the floor.

The prosecutor read the charges: attempted child endangerment, conspiracy to kidnap, forgery, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement.

When it was time for bail to be set, my parents' high-priced defense attorney stood up. "Your Honor, my clients are upstanding pillars of the community. This was a tragic domestic misunderstanding. We request a reasonable bail."

I stood up from the gallery. The judge looked at me, giving me permission to speak.

"Your Honor," my voice resonated through the silent courtroom. "They put a four-year-old child in a commercial dumpster underneath heavy bags. They drugged her to silence her. If my fiancé and I hadn't found her, she would be dead. They are not pillars of the community; they are monsters who value money over human life."

The judge’s face hardened. "Bail is denied. All three defendants will remain in custody pending trial." As they were led away, my mother caught my eye. "You ungrateful brat!" she shrieked. "We gave you everything!"

I didn't blink. "You gave me nothing but the strength to destroy you."
