Chapter 1 - The Silver Key

The tall man crouched beside Eleanor, his dark eyes filled with immediate concern. "Grandmother, I was looking everywhere for you. Why didn't you stay in the car?"
"Julian," Eleanor said softly, resting her hand on his sleeve. "I wanted to buy a vanilla cake, but the clerks inside thought I didn't belong."
Julian turned his gaze toward the glass doors of Bellrose Patisserie. His jaw clenched, his expression shifting into something icy and formidable. He stood up, looking at the two clerks through the window. With a brief gesture, he called his driver over.
"Call Mr. Bellrose," Julian said smoothly, his tone low and chilling. "Tell him the Hale Corporation is pulling its sponsorship from his franchise expansion immediately. And inform him his floor staff needs to be replaced by four o'clock."
The driver nodded promptly and pulled out his phone.
Lena’s heart skipped a beat. Hale Corporation. Eleanor wasn't just a silver-haired grandmother in a faded coat—she was Eleanor Hale, matriarch of one of the most powerful real estate and retail dynasties in North Carolina.
Julian turned back to Lena, taking in her patched coat, her old boots, and the heavy canvas bag resting at her side.
"My grandmother told me what you did," Julian said, his voice softening slightly as he looked down at her. "You defended her when no one else would, and you gave her your last meal."
"She was hungry," Lena said simply, standing up and dusting off her skirt. "Anyone would have done it."
"No," Eleanor chimed in, smiling warmly. "Most people passed by and ignored me. Lena is different, Julian. She is a talented designer, and she has a heart that hasn't been hardened by this city."
Julian looked at Lena for a long, quiet moment, his dark eyes searching hers. "I am Julian Hale. My family owes you a debt, Miss Brooks. And the Hales always pay their debts."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek, metallic silver business card stamped with a golden crest. He pressed it into Lena's hand.
"Come to the Hale Tower tomorrow at nine," Julian said quietly. "We have something to discuss."
