Chapter 3 - The Masked Truth

Three days later, Lena Brooks became Mrs. Julian Hale in a private, elegant ceremony at the Hale family estate.

The media erupted into a frenzy. Headlines blazoned across every news channel: THE CINDERLLA OF CHARLOTTE: MYSTERY SEAMSTRESS MARRIES REAL ESTATE TYCOON.

To the outside world, Julian was the devoted, protective husband, carrying Lena’s bags, holding her hand at public galas, and looking at her with a intense gaze that made her breath catch.

But behind the closed doors of their massive manor, Julian was a wall of ice.

He slept in a separate wing. He buried himself in work until three in the morning. And whenever Lena tried to ask about his past, he closed down instantly, changing the subject with cool efficiency.

"Don't confuse the performance with reality, Lena," Julian warned her one evening in the library, his tone distant as he poured himself a glass of bourbon. "We have a contract. We are partners in a business arrangement."

Yet, despite his cold words, Lena noticed small things.

He noticed when she didn't eat dinner and had the chef prepare her favorite stew. He quietly bought out the landlord who had threatened her with eviction and transferred the entire apartment building into her name so her old neighbors wouldn't be priced out.

He was a man built on contradictions—a ruthless billionaire who guarded his heart behind a wall of calculated lies.

And then came the night of the Autumn Gala.

Standing across the ballroom in a stunning crimson gown she had designed herself, Lena caught sight of Julian speaking hushedly in a dark corridor with a sleek, sharp-eyed woman named Victoria Vance—the daughter of his late father's rival.

"You're playing a dangerous game, Julian," Victoria sneered, running a manicured fingernail along his lapel. "Does your sweet little seamstress bride know that you don't even own Hale Corporation? Does she know about the shell company in the Cayman Islands?"

Lena ducked behind a marble pillar, her pulse racing.

Julian pushed Victoria’s hand away coldly. "Keep your mouth shut, Victoria. What I do with my father's legacy is none of your concern."

"It will be her concern," Victoria warned with a cruel laugh. "When she realizes she married a liar."
