Chapter 5 - The Thread Cuts

When Julian returned from his business trip that evening, he walked into the master study to find Lena standing by his desk.

The legal marriage contract lay torn into pieces on the floor, alongside the file Arthur had handed her.

Julian stopped in the doorway, his eyes falling on the shredded paper. "Lena... what is this?"

"Is it true?" Lena asked, her voice quiet, trembling with a mix of heartbreak and fury. "Did you set up shell accounts under my name?"

Julian’s face went rigid. "Who spoke to you?"

"Answer me!" Lena demanded, stepping closer to him, tears finally spilling down her cheeks. "Did you marry me to shield yourself from a federal audit?! Did you use my name to hide stolen money?!"

Julian closed his eyes for a brief moment, a look of profound exhaustion passing over his dark features. "Lena... I cannot explain everything to you right now. You have to trust me."

"Trust you?" Lena laughed bitterly. "You told me you were paying off a debt! You made me believe you were a man of honor who cared about his grandmother! But you’re just like the clerks at the bakery—you look at people like me and see someone disposable!"

"I have NEVER viewed you as disposable!" Julian roared, his composure snapping as he took two fast steps toward her. "I have spent every waking second of the last six months trying to keep you safe!"

"By making me a suspect in a corporate crime?!"

"You don't understand what my uncle is capable of!" Julian yelled.

"Then explain it to me!" Lena pleaded, her voice breaking. "Tell me the truth, Julian! Give me one reason not to walk out that door right now!"

Julian stood frozen, his jaw working, his eyes dark with secrets he couldn't bring himself to speak.

Silence stretched between them—heavy, cold, and final.

Lena wiped her eyes, pulled the simple diamond wedding ring off her finger, and placed it on the desk.

"Keep your money, Mr. Hale," she whispered. "I’d rather be poor and free than rich and used."

She turned and walked out of the manor into the pouring rain.
