Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Confrontation

At 2:00 PM that afternoon, the executive conference room on the 40th floor was filled with regional managers, corporate lawyers, and department heads for the quarterly review meeting. Sitting near the end of the long oak table, looking smug and composed in a expensive suit, was Richard Vance.

Ethan sat at the head of the table. To his right sat Claire, holding a sleeping Sophie in her arms. The presence of a young mother and a baby in a high-level corporate board meeting had drawn hushed whispers and bewildered glances from the executives, but no one dared question Ethan.

"Before we begin the financial presentation," Ethan said, his voice echoing with absolute control through the silent room, "we have an urgent administrative matter to address regarding the Northern District."

Richard Vance adjusted his silk tie, offering a polished, practiced smile. "Of course, Ethan. The Northern District integration is progressing smoothly. We’ve managed to reduce operational costs by twelve percent over the last quarter."

"By reducing staff, falsifying records, and blacklisting qualified healthcare workers?" Ethan asked mildly.

Vance’s smile faltered. "I... I beg your pardon?"

Ethan signaled to Sarah, who began handing out copies of a thick dossier to every executive at the table.

"In front of you is a forensic audit of the Northern District’s payroll and charitable distribution accounts over the past three years," Ethan announced, his eyes fixed entirely on Vance. "It outlines a systemic pattern of fraud, embezzlement, and official misconduct totaling over $450,000. Funds intended for low-income pediatric care were siphoned into shell accounts managed by Mr. Vance's family members."

Vance’s face flushed a deep, violent crimson. "This is absurd! This is a smear campaign! Who supplied this garbage?" He glared across the table at Claire. "Her? You're listening to her? Ethan, this woman was fired from Valley General for gross negligence! She’s an unstable, disgraced former assistant who—"

"Silence," Ethan commanded. The single word slammed into the room like a gavel.

Ethan stood up slowly, leaning his hands on the table. "Claire Morgan did not supply these records, Vance. My legal and IT security teams extracted them from your encrypted server at 3:00 AM this morning. And as for her termination..." Ethan pressed a button on the conference console.

A massive digital screen at the front of the room flickered to life, displaying a high-definition video feed of Valley General’s nurse station from six months prior, alongside the verified digital access logs. It clearly showed Claire completing her shift, locking the dispensary, and handing the keys to the charge nurse, followed by footage of Vance entering the office an hour later and altering the paper records.

The room gasped. Several executives turned to look at Vance in disgust.

"You didn't just commit corporate theft, Richard," Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "You abused your power to destroy a dedicated mother’s livelihood. You ensured she couldn't feed her infant child, all so you could cover up your petty greed."

Vance began to sweat profusely, his eyes darting toward the exit. "Ethan, please... we can discuss this privately—"

"There is nothing to discuss," Ethan replied cold-bloodedly. "Two detectives from the State Police Financial Crimes Division are waiting for you in the lobby. Your license to practice healthcare administration is permanently revoked. You are terminated, effective immediately."

As two security officers stepped into the boardroom and escorted a pale, shaking Vance out of the building, the room remained dead silent. Claire sat frozen, tears of relief spilling over her lashes. The monster who had terrorized her life for months was finally gone.

Ethan turned to Claire, his harsh expression softening completely. He stepped toward her in front of the entire board.

"Claire Morgan," Ethan said clearly. "On behalf of Cole Healthcare Systems, I officially offer you a full reinstatement, a complete clearance of your record, and a appointment as the Director of Patient Advocacy for our new regional outreach program. Starting salary is $95,000, with full medical benefits and remote flexibility for your daughter."

Claire gasped, clutching Sophie close. "Ethan... I... I don't know what to say."

"Say yes," Ethan murmured, a rare, genuine smile touching his lips.
