Chapter 9 - Promises in the Snow

A month after Victoria’s arrest and the complete purging of her corrupt faction from the board, peace finally returned to Cole Healthcare Systems. Under Ethan’s renewed leadership, the company launched the Morgan Foundation for Pediatric Emergency Care—a massive, fully funded charitable branch led by Claire, designed to ensure that no mother would ever be denied formula, medicine, or emergency aid due to administrative red tape or financial hardship.

It was a cold, quiet Tuesday evening—exactly one year to the day since Claire had typed that fateful, wrong-number text message.

Snow fell gently outside the floor-to-ceiling windows of Claire’s cozy condo. Inside, the apartment was warm, lit by the golden glow of a fireplace and a twinkling Christmas tree. Sophie, now a happy, healthy nineteen-month-old toddler, was giggling on the rug, stacking wooden blocks with Arthur, Ethan’s loyal driver, who had become a surrogate grandfather to the baby.

A soft knock sounded at the front door.

Claire walked over and opened it. Standing on the porch, wrapped in his familiar charcoal coat, carrying a single, beautiful bouquet of white roses and a small, wrapped box, was Ethan.

"You don't need to knock, Ethan," Claire smiled, stepping aside to let him in. "You have a key."

"I wanted to make sure I did it right tonight," Ethan said, his voice filled with a tender nervousness that Claire had never seen in the confident CEO before.

He handed her the flowers, leaning down to kiss her forehead gently. He then walked over to Sophie, scooping her up into a big hug. Sophie babbled happily, clapping her tiny hands against his cheeks.

After putting Sophie to bed two hours later, Claire and Ethan walked out onto the private balcony. The snow was falling in soft, silent flakes, coating the city in a blanket of pristine white. Ethan wrapped his arms around Claire from behind, pulling her back against his chest to keep her warm.

"One year ago tonight," Claire whispered, leaning her head back against his shoulder. "I had $3.18 in my bank account. I was holding a starving baby, crying in the dark, thinking my life was over."

Ethan tightened his hold around her waist, burying his face in her hair. "And one year ago tonight, I was sitting alone in a penthouse, surrounded by billions of dollars, feeling completely empty and purposeless. A wrong text saved both of us, Claire."

Ethan gently turned her around so she was facing him. His dark eyes were luminous under the terrace lights, filled with an overflowing, profound love. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out the small velvet box.

Claire’s breath hitched. Her hand flew to her mouth.

Ethan dropped to one knee in the soft snow. He opened the box, revealing a breathtaking diamond ring that caught the starlight.

"Claire Morgan," Ethan said, his voice rich with emotion. "You brought light, love, and true meaning into my world. You taught me what it means to fight for what matters, and you gave me a family I never thought I was allowed to have. I don't ever want to face a single day without you and Sophie."

He looked up into her tear-filled eyes. "Will you do me the honor of marrying me?"

Claire wiped away a stray tear, a radiant, overwhelming smile breaking across her face.

"Yes," she sobbed softly, laughing through her tears. "Yes, Ethan! A thousand times yes!"

Ethan slipped the ring onto her finger, standing up to pull her into a passionate, breathtaking kiss as the snow fell softly around them, sealing a promise made made in the darkest hour of the night.
