Chapter 7 - The Mastermind Unmasked

The next morning, the ethics audit took a sudden, dramatic turn.
Claire was at home playing with Sophie when her phone rang. It was Julian, the brilliant young IT specialist Ethan had called on the night they first met.
"Claire, I need you to come to corporate HQ right now," Julian said, his voice trembling with excitement. "I found something. Something massive."
Ten minutes later, Claire arrived at Julian’s server room in the basement of the corporate building. Ethan was already there, staring at three massive monitors filled with lines of code, bank routing numbers, and encrypted email threads.
"What is it, Julian?" Claire asked, holding Sophie tightly.
Julian pointed at the screen. "When Victoria launched her ethics audit, she gave my team full access to all high-level internal communications to search for 'suspicious transactions' between Ethan and you. But while I was running the audit software, I noticed a hidden data pipeline bouncing through an offshore server in the Cayman Islands."
Ethan’s eyes narrowed. "Who does the pipeline belong to?"
"It doesn't belong to you, and it doesn't belong to Claire," Julian said with a triumphant grin. "It belongs to Victoria Cole. And guess who she’s been communicating with for the last eight months?"
Julian pressed a key. A series of decrypted emails flashed on the screen.
The recipient's name sent a shockwave through the room: Richard Vance.
Claire gasped. "Richard Vance? But he was embezzling from Valley General!"
"He wasn't just embezzling for himself," Julian revealed. "Vance was intentionally sabotaging the Northern District’s finances and blacklisting top talent to drive down the acquisition value of Valley General! Victoria was paying him off under the table so she could buy up discounted stock in the subsidiary, artificially depress Cole Healthcare’s quarterly earnings, and use the financial panic to force the board to remove Ethan as CEO!"
Ethan stood frozen, his hands clenching into tight fists as the entire conspiracy laid itself bare. Victoria hadn't just been trying to protect the company from a scandal—she had engineered the entire crisis from the very beginning. She had partnered with the corrupt administrator who had almost starved Claire’s baby, all to steal control of the empire.
"She used Vance to manipulate the books, and when Vance got caught, she used Claire as a scapegoat to finish the job," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a register of terrifying calm.

"I have the full digital audit trail," Julian said, printing out a stack of verified bank transfers and signed agreements. "This is rock-solid evidence of corporate treason, insider trading, and conspiracy to commit fraud."
Ethan turned to Claire, a fierce, victorious light burning in his eyes. "The board meeting is in thirty minutes. It’s time to end this once and for all."
