Chapter 8 - The Fall of the House of Cole

The grand boardroom was packed to capacity. Every member of the board of directors was present, along with legal counsel and financial analysts. At the head of the table sat Victoria Cole, looking smugly victorious as she tapped her manicured fingernails on a folder containing her preliminary "ethics report."
"Members of the board," Victoria announced, her voice echoing with faux concern. "We are here today to discuss the severe breach of ethical standards committed by our CEO, Ethan Cole. As my report details, Mr. Cole has misused corporate authority to enrich an unvetted individual, dragging our pristine brand through the dirt—"
"Save your speech, Victoria," Ethan’s voice cut through the room as he pushed open the heavy double doors.
He walked in with absolute poise, followed by Claire, who was dressed in a sharp navy blazer, holding a folder of her own. Behind them walked two officers from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and a team of federal marshals.
Victoria’s face paled slightly, but she quickly recovered her arrogant demeanor. "Ethan, how dare you interrupt a formal board proceeding? And bringing this... woman back into this room is a violation of your suspension!"
"I’m not suspended, Victoria," Ethan said smoothly, taking his seat at the head of the table while Claire stood proudly at his side. "Because an ethics audit only works if the person launching it isn't an active criminal."
Ethan signaled to the SEC officers. One of them stepped forward and placed a federal subpoena directly in front of Victoria.
"Victoria Cole," the agent declared, "you are under federal investigation for insider trading, corporate conspiracy, and wire fraud."
Victoria leaped to her feet, her chair scraping loudly against the floor. "This is an outrage! On what grounds?"
"On the grounds of $12 million in illegal offshore wire transfers between your private account in Grand Cayman and Richard Vance," Claire spoke up, her voice clear, confident, and ringing with absolute authority. She stepped forward and laid a thick stack of financial documents on the center of the table. "Documents that detail how you intentionally crippled community health clinics, stripped funding from emergency pediatric care, and blacklisted innocent workers—all to manipulate Cole Healthcare stock."
The board members immediately grabbed the documents, gasping in horror as they scanned the verified bank logs and encrypted emails bearing Victoria’s digital signature.
"This is a lie! This is fabricated!" Victoria shrieked, her composed facade crumbling into wild panic. She looked around the room, desperate for support. "Board members, you know me! I am the widow of Arthur Cole! You can't believe this... this peasant over me!"
"The evidence has already been verified by federal forensic accountants, Mrs. Cole," the SEC agent stated coldly. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
As the federal marshals stepped forward and placed handcuffs around Victoria’s wrists, she glared at Claire with pure, unadulterated hatred. "You ruined me," she spat. "You worthless little nursing assistant... you ruined everything!"
Claire looked Victoria dead in the eye, her expression calm, unbothered, and filled with undeniable triumph.

"The system failed me once, Mrs. Cole," Claire said softly. "It won't fail anyone else on my watch."
The board watched in stunned silence as Victoria Cole was dragged out of the skyscraper in handcuffs, her reign of terror brought to a permanent, humiliating end.
