Chapter 4 - Unspoken Boundaries

In the weeks following the downfall of Richard Vance, Claire’s life underwent a dramatic transformation. She moved out of her cramped, freezing apartment into a bright, two-bedroom condo near a quiet park, paid for by her sign-on bonus and new salary. For the first time in Sophie’s life, Claire didn't have to count pennies at the grocery store or worry about whether she could afford formula.
Her new role as Director of Patient Advocacy suited her perfectly. She was tasked with overseeing corporate grants, ensuring low-income families received immediate emergency medical aid, and preventing administrative abuse within the system.
However, working closely with Ethan Cole brought an entirely new set of challenges.
Ethan was a man driven by work, disciplined to a fault, and fiercely guarded. Yet, when it came to Claire and Sophie, his stoic exterior dissolved completely. He had a custom crib installed in a quiet corner of his private executive suite so Claire could bring Sophie to work when needed. He frequently dropped by her desk under the guise of "checking project updates," only to spend twenty minutes awkwardly holding Sophie and letting the baby tug on his expensive silk ties.
"You're doing it again," Claire said one late Friday afternoon, leaning against the doorframe of Ethan’s office.
Ethan looked up from his laptop. Sophie was sitting on his lap, happily gnawing on a silicone teething ring while Ethan typed a multi-million-dollar proposal with one hand.
"Doing what?" Ethan asked innocently.
"Distracting my boss," Claire smiled, walking over to gently take Sophie from his arms. "You have a board review in ten minutes, Ethan. You can't show up to a corporate meeting with baby drool on your lapel."
Ethan looked down at his designer suit jacket, noticing the small damp patch near his pocket. Instead of being annoyed, he let out a low chuckle. "It adds character. Gives the board the impression that I have a life outside these four walls."
"Do you?" Claire asked softly, her tone turning gentle. "Have a life outside of work, I mean?"
Ethan’s smile faded slightly. He leaned back in his leather chair, resting his hands together. "Not for a long time, Claire. My father built this company from nothing. When he passed away four years ago, he left me a multi-billion-dollar machine. I’ve spent every waking moment keeping it running. I didn't think I had room for anything else."
His dark eyes locked onto hers, filled with an intensity that made Claire’s heart skip a beat.
"Until a wrong text message landed on my phone," Ethan added quietly.
Claire felt a sudden rush of heat in her cheeks. She looked down at Sophie, fighting the flutter in her chest. "Ethan... you've done so much for us. More than anyone ever has. But I don't ever want you to feel like you owe us anything, or that... that I'm taking advantage of your kindness."
Ethan stood up and walked around the desk, stopping just inches from her. The scent of his cedarwood cologne wrapped around her senses.
"Claire," he said, his voice dropping to a velvety whisper. "I don't do anything out of obligation. Helping you that night wasn't charity. Meeting you... was the best thing that has happened to me in years."
Before Claire could respond, a knock at the door shattered the intimacy of the moment. Sarah stepped into the office, looking pale and holding a tablet.
"Mr. Cole, I’m sorry to interrupt," Sarah said urgently. "We have a major problem. The board of directors has just called an emergency closed-door session."

Ethan frowned. "Regarding what?"
"Victoria Cole," Sarah replied nervously. "Your stepmother. She’s just arrived from London, and she’s brought a team of corporate auditors with her."
