Chapter 6 - Whispers and Whispers

The news of the ethics audit spread through the headquarters like wildfire. Though Ethan did his best to shield Claire, the corporate grapevine was relentless. Whispers followed Claire whenever she walked into the building to hand over her department’s files to the legal team.
"Did you hear? She's the reason the stock dropped two points today." "I heard she lured him to her apartment late at night." "She's just trying to secure a payday for her kid."
Claire kept her head held high, focusing entirely on her work and taking care of Sophie. She refused to let the cruel gossip drag her down. She knew the truth, and more importantly, she knew Ethan believed in her.
However, the strain on Ethan was immense. Victoria was waging a psychological war, leaking subtle, damaging rumors to financial journalists and turning several conservative board members against Ethan. Night after night, Ethan worked late into the dark hours, battling corporate lawyers and trying to preserve the company's integrity while keeping Claire’s name out of the headlines.
One evening, around 9:00 PM, Claire decided she couldn't just sit in her condo while Ethan fought her battles alone. She packed a home-cooked meal into a container, bundled Sophie into her stroller, and took a taxi to the headquarters.
The building was nearly dark, save for the top floor. Claire used her keycard—which Ethan had refused to deactivate—and rode the elevator to his office.
When she opened the door, she found Ethan sitting at his desk in the dark, his jacket off, his tie undone, his head resting in his hands. He looked utterly exhausted.
"Ethan?" she called out softly.
Ethan lifted his head. When he saw her standing there with Sophie, the exhaustion in his face seemed to melt away, replaced by a deep, profound relief.
"Claire," he breathed, standing up. "What are you doing here? It's late."
"You haven't been eating," Claire said, walking in and setting the food container on his table. "And I know you haven't been sleeping. I brought you dinner."
Ethan looked at the container, then up at Claire. A tired, self-deprecating smile touched his lips. "I’m supposed to be protecting you, Claire. Instead, I’ve brought chaos into your life."
"You saved my daughter's life, Ethan," Claire said firmly, stepping closer to him. "You gave me back my dignity. You proved to me that good men still exist in this world. A little corporate drama isn't going to scare me away."
Ethan stared at her, moved beyond words. He reached out, his long fingers gently cupping her cheek. His thumb brushed over her cheekbone with incredible tenderness.
"You are extraordinary, Claire Morgan," he whispered.
Claire’s breath hitched. She leaned into his touch, her heart hammering against her ribs. The corporate world, the rumors, Victoria’s threats—everything vanished. There was only Ethan.
Slowly, as if asking for permission, Ethan leaned down. Claire closed her eyes, tilting her face up.

When his lips met hers, it was soft, lingering, and filled with a deep, aching warmth that sent a shiver down Claire’s spine. It was a promise, a confession, and a refuge all at once.
When they finally pulled apart, Ethan rested his forehead against hers, his eyes dark with emotion. "I won't let her take this away from us, Claire. I promise you."
