Chapter 2 - The Footage and the Verdict

The emergency surgical theater smelled faintly of antiseptic and iodine. The rhythmic, rhythmic beep of the fetal heart monitor echoed through the sterile room like a ticking clock, setting the pace for every heartbeat in Marcus Thorne’s chest.
"Fetal heart rate is 135," Dr. Chen, the chief obstetrician, announced calmly, adjusting the ultrasound transducer across Khloe’s abdomen. " placental wall is intact. No sign of immediate abruption, but there is significant soft tissue trauma along her left flank and lower back."
Marcus squeezed Khloe's hand. She was hooked up to IV drips, oxygen resting gently over her nose and mouth. Her eyes were closed, heavily sedated from pain medication, but her grip on his fingers remained desperate, instinctively holding onto him.
"She’s going to be okay, Marcus," Dr. Vance whispered, stepping beside him in scrubs. "The baby is strong. Khloe protected her with her body during the fall. But if that stiletto heel had landed two inches to the left..." Arthur trailed off, his jaw muscles clenching in fury. "We would be planning a funeral."
"I want the video, Arthur," Marcus said, his tone ominously flat. He didn't look away from Khloe’s face. "Take me to the monitoring room now."
Ten minutes later, Marcus, Dr. Vance, and NYPD Detective James Miller stood inside the climate-controlled security vault of St. Jude’s Hospital. On three large high-definition screens, the raw, unedited footage of the VIP suite played.
The video was terrifyingly clear.
There was no audio ambiguity, no blind spots. The camera captured Isabella pushing Khloe, the shattering of the champagne glass, and the agonizing moment Isabella stepped forward, her face twisted in sadistic hatred, slamming her stiletto heel into Khloe's side as the pregnant woman lay helpless on the floor.
"You were never supposed to stand beside him. You were supposed to smile for the cameras, give him the child he wanted… and disappear." Isabella’s whispered words rang loudly through the room’s surround sound speakers.
Detective Miller pressed pause on the frame showing Isabella’s heel striking Khloe’s ribs. The detective let out a low whistle, shaking his head.
"This isn't just assault, Mr. Thorne," Miller declared, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs from his tactical belt. "This is premeditated felony assault, reckless endangerment, and attempted murder of an unborn child. The D.A. will have a field day with this."
"Make sure she doesn't get bail, Detective," Marcus said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying the terrifying weight of his billions. "If any judge sets bail, I will buy the bank that holds that judge's mortgage by sunrise."
Downstairs in the holding lounge, Isabella sat surrounded by four armed officers, her face pale, her hands trembling as her family lawyer, Raymond Vance (no relation to Arthur), rushed into the room carrying a leather briefcase.
"Isabella! What on earth happened?!" Raymond demanded in a hushed, furious whisper. "Your father is on his private jet back from London right now! The media is already surrounding the hospital gates!"
"Raymond, you have to get me out of here!" Isabella wailed, her voice high and panicked, completely stripped of her previous upper-class poise. "It was an accident! Khloe attacked me first! They're lying!"
The heavy steel door swung open. Detective Miller stepped inside, followed by two uniformed NYPD officers.
"Isabella Rossi," Miller said loudly, pulling the paper warrant from his jacket. "You are under arrest for Aggravated Assault in the First Degree, Assault on a Pregnant Person, and Attempted Feticide."
"What?!" Raymond shouted, stepping between them. "This is absurd! My client is a respected philanthropist! This is a simple misunderstanding between high-society acquaintances—"
"Save it for the judge, counselor," Miller snapped, shoving Raymond aside. He grabbed Isabella’s manicured wrists, spinning her around and slapping the cold steel handcuffs over her wrists.
"Get your hands off me!" Isabella shrieked, kicking wildly as the cuffs bit into her skin. "I am an Rossi! Marcus loves me! He's being manipulated by that worthless orphan! You can't do this to me!"

"You have the right to remain silent," Miller read mechanically as the officers dragged the screaming, sobbing heiress down the private corridor toward the police escort waiting in the underground loading dock.
As they pushed her into the back of the dark police cruiser, flashbulbs suddenly exploded like lightning. Dozens of paparazzi and news reporters, tipped off by event staff, swarmed the vehicle, cameras pressed against the tinted glass, capturing the image of Manhattan’s elite 'Golden Girl' in handcuffs, ruined and humiliated.
