Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Past

Three days later, Khloe was moved from the ICU to a private recovery suite. Though her body was bruised and her movements were slow, her mind was sharper than ever.
In the quiet hours of the afternoon, Marcus sat at his laptop beside her bed, reviewing a thick stack of financial documents brought to him by his chief intelligence officer, David Vance (Arthur’s younger brother and Marcus’s top corporate investigator).
"Look at this, Khloe," Marcus said, turning the laptop screen toward her.
"What is it?" Khloe asked, adjusting her pillows.
"It’s the forensic audit of the Rossi Maritime holding company," Marcus explained, pointing to a series of offshore bank transfers originating from Grand Cayman and Zurich. "Isabella's attack on you wasn't just driven by personal jealousy or unrequited love. It was a calculated distraction."
David Vance leaned against the wall, crossing his arms. "For the past six months, Victor and Isabella Rossi have been systematically embezzling funds from the joint venture investment account they shared with Thorne Enterprises. Over two hundred million dollars went missing."
Khloe’s eyes widened. "They were stealing from you?"
"Worse," Marcus said coldly. "They were using that money to buy illegal short options against Thorne Enterprises stock. Isabella’s plan was simple: create a massive public scandal involving our marriage, ruin our family's reputation, cause Thorne Enterprises stock to plummet, and trigger a financial margin call that would force me to surrender controlling shares of my own company to the Rossi Group."
Khloe sat in stunned silence as the terrifying scope of the conspiracy settled over her. "She didn't just want you, Marcus... she wanted to destroy everything you built. She wanted to strip me of everything and leave us ruined."
"Exactly," David added. "She knew that if you were distracted by a tragic miscarriage or a high-profile divorce, you wouldn't notice the financial trap closing around your neck until it was too late. But she miscalculated one thing."
"She miscalculated Khloe's strength," Marcus said, looking at his wife with intense admiration and love. "And she miscalculated how fast Arthur’s security network operates."
Just then, Marcus’s encrypted satellite phone rang. He pressed speaker.
"Boss," came the voice of his chief legal counsel, Sarah Sterling. "We have a problem. Isabella’s lawyers just filed a motion with a corrupt circuit judge in Albany. They managed to secure a temporary transfer of Isabella from Rikers Island to a high-security private medical clinic in Westchester, claiming she is suffering from severe clinical depression and psychotic breaks."
Marcus’s jaw set into a hard line. "They're trying to lay the groundwork for an insanity plea so she avoids federal prison."
"They are," Sarah confirmed. "And there's more. Victor Rossi just leaked a set of fabricated photos to the tabloid media showing you and Isabella together at a hotel in Paris two years ago. They are launching a massive smear campaign to convince the public that you were having an affair and that Khloe attacked Isabella out of marital rage."

Khloe felt a sharp sting of anger in her chest. "They are trying to twist the victim into the villain."
Marcus took Khloe’s hand and kissed it tenderly, his eyes glowing with dangerous resolve. "Let them throw their lies. They think they are playing a chess game, but they don't realize I'm about to burn the entire chessboard."
