Chapter 3 - Foundations Cracking

By the next morning, the scandal had engulfed the global news cycle like a wildfire.
THE THORNE TERROR: ROSSI HEIRESS ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER OF PREGNANT KHLOE THORNE! read the front-page headline of the New York Post.
Inside the quiet, darkened room of the Intensive Care Unit, Marcus sat in a chair pulled close to Khloe’s bed. The television monitor on the wall was muted, but the floating news tickers showed endless pictures of Isabella being led out of Precinct 17 in handcuffs, her hair disheveled, her eyes bloodshot.
Khloe slowly stirred, her dark lashes fluttering open. The morning sunlight filtered softly through the heavy velvet blinds.
"Marcus...?" she murmured faintly.
Marcus was instantly on his feet, leaning over her, his hands gently framing her pale face. "I'm right here, my heart. I'm right here. How do you feel? Do you need more pain medication?"
Khloe reached down, her hand instinctively coming to rest on her bump. She felt a small, firm kick from within. Tears of relief pooled in her eyes. "She's... she's moving..."
"She's fine," Marcus promised, his voice cracking with emotion as he kissed Khloe’s forehead softly. "The doctors checked her an hour ago. Strong heartbeat. She's a fighter, just like her mother."
Khloe let out a shaky breath, turning her head toward the muted TV screen. She saw Isabella's face plastered across the news broadcast. "Is she...?"
"She's in central booking. No bail," Marcus said, his expression hardening like granite. "Her legal team tried to file an emergency habeas corpus writ this morning, but Arthur gave the District Attorney the unedited 4K security footage. The judge denied bail instantly. She will remain in a cell until trial."
Before Khloe could respond, the heavy wooden door opened. Victor Rossi, the billionaire patriarch of the Rossi family, stepped into the room. He was a ruthless, silver-haired man in a bespoke three-piece suit, accompanied by two bodyguards who remained outside in the hallway.
Marcus stood up immediately, stepping between Victor and Khloe’s bed, his posture pure predatory aggression. "You have five seconds to step back into that hallway, Victor, before I have my security break your legs."
Victor Rossi raised his hands in a gesture of temporary peace, though his face was tight with suppressed rage and shame. "Marcus. Please. We have known each other for twenty years. My family has traded with yours for generations."
"Your daughter nearly murdered my child, Victor," Marcus growled, his voice vibrating with dangerous power. "There is no trade, no history, and no friendship left between us."
"Isabella is sick!" Victor pleaded, taking a small step forward, his voice dropping to an urgent whisper. "She lost her mind! She was obsessed with you, Marcus! But putting her in Rikers Island? She won't survive a week there! I am begging you... accept a settlement. Ten million, fifty million... name your price! We will announce she is entering a private psychiatric facility in Switzerland! Just withdraw the criminal complaint!"
Khloe pushed herself up slightly against her pillows, her voice remarkably clear and cold despite her weak state.
"My child's life is not for sale, Mr. Rossi," Khloe said, staring directly into the older man's eyes. "Your daughter sat over me while I was bleeding on the floor and told me I was nothing. She thought her money made her invincible. Let her learn what real accountability feels like."
Victor looked at Khloe, shock flashing across his aged face. He had always viewed Khloe as a quiet, insignificant girl from a modest background who got lucky marrying Marcus Thorne. He had never expected this level of icy steel from her.
"You are making a dangerous enemy, Mrs. Thorne," Victor warned, his tone turning dark and bitter. "The Rossi family built this city's shipping ports. We have resources you cannot even imagine."

Marcus stepped directly into Victor’s personal space, towering over the older man. "And I control the lines of credit that fund your shipping fleet, Victor. By 9:00 AM tomorrow, when the Wall Street bell rings, I will initiate a short sell-off of Rossi Maritime stock that will wipe out forty percent of your net worth before lunch. Get out of my wife's room."
Victor gasped, turning pale, realizing too late that in trying to intimidate the Thornes, he had brought his entire empire to the brink of total destruction. He turned on his heel and hurried out of the suite, the heavy door slamming shut behind him.
