Chapter 10 - Where the Heart Is

Three months later.
The morning sun streamed through the wide glass windows of a charming, newly renovated bakery on Michigan Avenue. The gold lettering on the front window read: Claire’s Sweet Provisions.
Inside, the air smelled of roasted coffee, melted dark chocolate, and fresh, flaky croissants.
Claire stood behind the glass display case, placing the final touch on a towering four-tier vanilla-bean cake decorated with delicate sugar flowers.
The bell above the door chimed softly.
Claire looked up, a bright, radiant smile breaking across her face.
Walking through the door were four identical little boys wearing matching denim jackets, carrying school backpacks. Behind them walked Julian Vance, looking relaxed, incredibly handsome in a simple charcoal sweater and jeans, free of his usual icy corporate armor.
"Claire!" Theo yelled, running up to the counter. "Lucas didn't spill his juice on the bus today!"
"I put the cap on tight," Lucas announced proudly, stepping up beside his brother and smiling up at her. He was talking constantly now—his quiet world replaced by laughter and endless curiosity.
"Good job, Lucas," Claire laughed, reaching over the counter to ruffle his hair. "I saved four warm cinnamon rolls for you guys in the back."
The boys cheered and scurried into the cozy private dining room at the back of the shop, guided by Gideon, who was now acting as a combination of bodyguard and extremely patient uncle.
Julian walked slowly up to the counter, resting his hands on the polished wood, his dark eyes watching Claire with endless warmth.
"The shop looks incredible, Claire," Julian said softly.
"It feels surreal," Claire admitted, looking around the bustling bakery she now owned outright. "A year ago, I was broke, terrified, and drinking cold tea in a shop down the street."
"And now?" Julian asked, stepping around the counter, entering her space.
"And now... I have everything I ever wanted," Claire whispered, looking up into his eyes.
Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box—not the blue sapphire box from three months ago, but a new, simple red velvet box.
He opened it to reveal a delicate, hand-crafted gold ring set with a brilliant, shimmering diamond.
"The first ring was a contract, Claire," Julian said, his voice thick with raw, honest emotion as he took her right hand, sliding off the old ring and holding her bare fingers in his. "It was a business agreement to protect my sons."
He dropped to one knee right there on the bakery floor, surrounded by the smell of vanilla and sugar.
"This ring," Julian continued, looking up at her with complete, unreserved devotion, "is a promise from a man who fell completely, helplessly in love with the woman who saved his family. Will you marry me, Claire? For real this time. For the rest of our lives."
Tears of pure joy spilled over Claire’s eyelashes. She didn't hesitate for a single second.
"Yes," Claire sobbed happily, dropping to her knees beside him, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck. "Yes, Julian! A thousand times yes!"

Julian pulled her into his arms, kissing her deeply, tenderly, as cheers and applause erupted from the back room where Noah, Eli, Theo, and Lucas were jumping up and down in celebration.
Outside, the Chicago sun broke through the autumn clouds, casting a warm, golden light over the street. The tea shop across the road stood quiet, but inside Claire’s Sweet Provisions, a family forged in chaos had finally found its home—unbreakable, cherished, and forever whole.
