Chapter 8 - The Shadow's Last Stand

The victory celebration at the penthouse was quiet, joyful, and filled with homemade pizza and chocolate cake.

By 10:00 PM, all four boys were fast asleep in their beds, exhausted from the day's emotional roller coaster.

Claire sat on her private balcony, wrapping a thick knitted cardigan around herself as the cool night wind blew off Lake Michigan. The ninety-day contract felt strangely distant now. The custody battle was over. The debt was cleared.

Technically, her job was done.

A quiet step behind her announced Julian's arrival. He carried two mugs of hot tea, handing one to her as he sat on the stone bench beside her.

"Thank you," Claire said, taking a sip. "For the tea. And... for everything."

"I should be thanking you," Julian said softly, looking out at the glittering city lights. "You saved my family, Claire. You gave my sons back their childhood."

"They're great kids, Julian. They didn't need much—just permission to be children again."

Silence settled between them—not awkward, but heavy with unsaid words.

"So," Claire murmured, looking down at her tea. "What happens now?"

"Now?" Julian turned his head to look at her, his dark eyes catching the ambient light of the city. "Now, Arthur realizes he lost in court, which means he will try to hit my business infrastructure next."

Claire frowned. "What do you mean?"

"Arthur controls three major shipping ports in the Midwest," Julian explained, his voice growing cold. "An hour ago, Gideon informed me that Arthur’s men blocked two of my primary logistics supply lines at the South Dock. He wants to bankrupt Vance Global before the quarter ends."

Claire set her mug down, a sudden wave of indignation washing over her. "He just doesn't know when to lose, does he?"

"Men like Arthur don't accept defeat," Julian said, standing up. "I have to go to the docks tonight to settle this personally."

Claire stood up too, grabbing his wrist before he could turn away. "Julian, no! It’s dangerous! He wants you to go down there alone!"

Julian looked down at her hand on his wrist, then up into her eyes. The coldness in his face melted into something fiercely protective.

"I've spent ten years building an empire so no one could ever push me around, Claire," Julian whispered, leaning down until his lips were inches from hers. "I won't let him threaten the life we're building here."

He leaned in and pressed a gentle, lingering kiss against her forehead—a promise sealed in the dark.

"Stay here with the boys," Julian said softly. "I'll be back before breakfast."
