Chapter 6 - The Hearing

Courtroom 402 of the Cook County Family Law Courthouse was cold, sterile, and packed with high-profile journalists and legal teams.

Judge Eleanor Vance—no relation to Julian—sat behind the high wooden bench, reviewing thick stacks of petitions.

On the left sat Arthur Sterling and his team of six high-priced corporate attorneys. On the right sat Julian, Claire, and their lead counsel, Marcus Hayes.

"Your Honor," Arthur’s lead attorney began, stepping forward with practiced dramatic flair. "We are here to protect four vulnerable seven-year-old boys from an environment of instability and criminal threat. Julian Vance's lifestyle attracts danger. Furthermore, he is an emotionally distant father who leaves his children to wander public tea shops unsupervised—as evidenced by these photographs taken just three days ago!"

He projected the photos taken outside Rose & Finch onto the large courtroom monitor.

The images showed the four quadruplets inside the shop, surrounded by strangers, looking anxious.

"These children have no maternal presence, no stability, and no emotional anchor," the attorney argued passionately. "Arthur Sterling offers a structured, secure estate with full-time private care!"

Judge Vance raised her eyebrows, turning her sharp gaze toward Julian's table. "Mr. Hayes, your response?"

Marcus Hayes stood up calmly. "Your Honor, the petitioner’s claim of instability is entirely manufactured. The photos presented show my client's sons in the care of their future stepmother, Miss Claire Bennett."

"A woman hired three days ago to fix his public image!" Arthur shouted out from his seat, ignoring his lawyer's warning hand. "It's a sham engagement! A desperate legal trick!"

"Is that true, Miss Bennett?" Judge Vance asked, her eyes fixing onto Claire with intense scrutiny. "Step forward, please."

Claire took a breath, felt Julian’s hand squeeze hers briefly under the table, and walked to the podium.

"Miss Bennett," the judge said softly. "You are under oath. Is your relationship with Mr. Vance a legal arrangement designed for this trial?"

The room held its breath. Arthur leaned forward with a triumphant smirk. Julian kept his eyes fixed on Claire, his expression calm, though his jaw was clenched tight.

Claire looked at the judge, then glanced back at the second row of the gallery, where the four boys sat quietly under Gideon’s watchful eye. She saw Lucas holding his little velvet bear, watching her with total trust.

"Your Honor," Claire said, her voice resonant and clear. "I met Julian Vance three days ago under chaotic circumstances. But what I saw that day wasn't a criminal or an indifferent father. I saw a man who dropped everything to race across the city the moment he realized his children were frightened. I saw a father whose sons love him so fiercely that they ran away just to buy him a birthday cake."

She looked directly at Arthur.

"I didn't move into Julian's home to save his trial. I moved in because those four boys deserve a home filled with warmth, not surveillance cameras and custody battles. My love for those children is not a sham, Your Honor. And neither is my commitment to protecting them beside Julian."

A heavy silence descended over the courtroom.

Judge Vance studied Claire for a long, agonizing ten seconds. Then she looked down at her notes and made a swift, decisive notation.

"This court will recess for two hours," Judge Vance declared, striking her gavel. "Before I issue a ruling, I will interview the children privately in my chambers."
