Chapter 7 - The Voice of Lucas

The two-hour recess felt like two centuries.

Claire sat in the small, private waiting room outside the judge's chambers, pacing the length of the carpet. Julian stood by the window, his arms crossed, staring out at the grey skyline.

"You didn't have to say those things," Julian spoke softly, breaking the silence. "About loving them. About... commitment."

"I meant it," Claire said, stopping her pacing to look at him. "They're amazing kids, Julian. They've been through so much loss, yet they care so deeply about you. You’ve done a wonderful job with them, even if you don't know how to express it."

Julian turned around slowly. He walked over to her, stopping close enough that she could smell the subtle scent of cedar and rain on his jacket.

"I spent three years hiding behind my work because I was afraid," Julian confessed quietly, his voice lower than she had ever heard it. "I was afraid that if I let myself feel anything after Victoria died, I would break completely. But when I saw you in that tea shop... when I saw you holding Lucas's hand... I realized how cold I had let our world become."

He reached out, his long fingers gently tucking a stray lock of brown hair behind her ear.

"You brought the sun back into this house, Claire."

Claire’s heart thumped wildly against her ribs. The look in his eyes wasn't part of an act. It was raw, real, and breathtakingly tender.

Before she could answer, the door to the judge's chambers opened.

Judge Vance stepped out, holding Lucas by his hand, while Noah, Eli, and Theo followed behind.

Arthur Sterling and his legal team rushed into the hallway from the main courtroom. "Your Honor! What did the children say? It's obvious they've been coached!"

Judge Vance held up a hand, her face unreadable.

"Mr. Sterling," the judge said sternly. "I have conducted family court interviews for twenty-two years. Children do not lie about where they feel safe."

She turned her attention to Julian and Claire.

"In my chambers, I asked the boys about their home life," Judge Vance continued. "Noah told me about their father reading to them every night. Eli and Theo told me about baking tarts with Miss Bennett. But it was Lucas who gave me the final answer."

Julian’s breath hitched. "Lucas?"

"Lucas spoke to me," Judge Vance smiled softly, looking down at the quietest boy. "He told me, and I quote: 'Dad protects us from the monsters outside. And Claire makes the inside feel like home.'"

Tears welled up in Claire's eyes. She dropped to her knees, opening her arms, and Lucas ran straight into them, burying his face into her shoulder. Noah, Eli, and Theo piled in right behind him, wrapping their arms around Claire in a chaotic group hug.

Arthur stood frozen, his mouth open, his face pale as stone.

"Mr. Sterling," Judge Vance declared coldly, turning to Arthur. "Your petition for emergency sole custody is DENIED with prejudice. Full legal and physical custody remains permanently with Julian Vance."
