Chapter 5 - The Gala of Vipers

The night before the custody hearing, Arthur Sterling hosted the annual Sterling Heritage Gala at the Drake Hotel—a high-society charity event where Chicago’s elite gathered to showcase their wealth and power.
Julian had insisted on attending.
"Arthur wants to control the narrative," Julian explained as they rode in the back of the Maybach toward the hotel. "He expects us to hide until the court hearing. Showing up together sends a clear message that we are unified."
Claire looked down at her dress. Julian’s personal stylist had delivered a breathtaking midnight-blue silk gown with an off-the-shoulder neckline that matched the sapphires in her engagement ring. Her soft brown hair was styled in an elegant chignon, revealing the long line of her neck.
Beside her, Julian looked dangerously handsome in a tailored black tuxedo. His dark hair was brushed back, his jaw sharp and clean-shaven.
"You look stunning, Claire," Julian said softly, breaking the silence in the vehicle. It was the first time he had called her by her first name without a formal title.
Claire looked at him, her heart skipping an unexpected beat. "I feel like an imposter."
"You're not," Julian said, reaching out and gently taking her hand. His grip was firm and reassuring. "Remember: you are with me. No one in that room can touch you."
When they walked through the grand double doors of the ballroom, the room seemed to go silent for three terrifying seconds. Camera flashes exploded like miniature lightning bolts. Whispers rippled through the crowd of politicians, judges, and corporate titans.
"Julian Vance... and who is that?" "Is that a ring?" "I thought he was single..."
Standing near the center of the room, surrounded by politicians, was Arthur Sterling. He was a silver-haired man in his late sixties with cold, ruthless blue eyes and a posture carved from old money and absolute arrogance.
Arthur’s eyes narrowed as Julian and Claire approached.
"Julian," Arthur said, his voice smooth as silk and cold as ice. "I didn't expect you to have the audacity to show your face tonight."
"Arthur," Julian replied smoothly, his hand resting comfortably on the small of Claire's back, his thumb sending a subtle, reassuring warmth through her silk dress. "I couldn't miss your annual gala. Allow me to introduce my fiancée, Claire Bennett."
Arthur’s sharp eyes darted down to the sapphire ring on Claire's finger, then up to her face, scanning her with ruthless efficiency.
"Fiancée?" Arthur let out a soft, mocking laugh. "How convenient. A pastry cook from a middle-class background suddenly elevated to the prospective mother of my daughter's children... forty-eight hours before our custody hearing."
Claire felt a surge of anger cut through her nervousness. She didn't shrink back. Instead, she took a half-step forward, looking Arthur directly in his icy blue eyes.
"Mr. Sterling," Claire spoke, her voice clear and carrying effortlessly across the circle of onlookers. "I may be a pastry cook, but I know the difference between sweet words and poison. The boys don't need your corporate legacy or your surveillance cameras. They need a home where they feel safe enough to laugh. And if you think a judge won't see the difference tomorrow, you're severely underestimating what a real family looks like."
A quiet gasp rippled through the surrounding crowd.
Arthur’s face flushed a deep, ugly red. He opened his mouth to snap a response, but Julian stepped smoothly between them, his towering frame casting a dark shadow over the older man.
"Have a good evening, Arthur," Julian said softly. "We'll see you in court."
May you like
As they walked away toward the terrace, Claire’s hands were shaking slightly from the adrenaline rush. Julian looked down at her, a fierce, dark pride burning in his eyes.
"That," Julian whispered close to her ear, "was spectacular."
