Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Records

The storm outside raged on into the early hours of the morning, beating against the high arched windows of the Moretti estate like a relentless battering ram.

By 3:30 a.m., Dr. Antonio Giuliano—a white-haired physician who had served the Moretti family for three decades—arrived through the subterranean entrance beneath the wine cellar. His medical bag clutched tightly in his hand, his coat dripping wet, he was escorted directly into Rocco’s private third-floor quarters.

Inside the sprawling bedroom, a fire crackled in the wide stone fireplace.

The newborn lay on a nest of soft cashmere blankets atop the massive four-poster bed. Elena was sitting on the edge of the mattress, gently rocking the child, while Sophia sat on a footstool near the hearth, her knees pulled up to her chin, her little notebook open on her lap.

Rocco stood near the window, a glass of un-iced scotch in his hand, staring out into the black rain.

Dr. Giuliano finished his examination, carefully placing his stethoscope back into his leather bag. He wiped his wire-rimmed glasses with a handkerchief, his hands trembling slightly.

"Well, Antonio?" Rocco asked, without turning around from the window.

Dr. Giuliano swallowed hard. "The child is remarkably healthy, Rocco. He’s no more than three days old. Full term, strong heart, normal reflexes. Whoever cared for him prior to tonight knew what they were doing."

Rocco turned around slowly, his eyes fixed on the doctor. "What about the bracelet, Antonio? You were the chief administrator at St. Helena eight years ago."

Dr. Giuliano’s face went entirely grey. He took a staggering step back, gripping the edge of a marble side table for support.

"Rocco... I swear to you on my mother's grave, I knew nothing about this," the old doctor stammered, his voice laced with absolute terror. "Eight years ago, when your firstborn was delivered, Valentina’s personal physician, Dr. Harrison, handled the entire labor in the private VIP suite. He cleared the floor. He refused to let my staff enter."

"And the death certificate?" Rocco stepped forward, his heavy leather shoes making no sound on the thick Oriental rug. "You signed it, Antonio."

"Harrison brought me the signed chart!" Giuliano wept quietly. "He showed me the cold room logs! He said the child was stillborn and that Valentina was too hysterically traumatized to allow an open casket. He requested immediate cremation per family instructions. I... I trusted him! Harrison was a board member!"

Rocco reached into his jacket, pulled out a dark photograph, and tossed it onto the bed.

It was a printout from a secure database.

"Harrison died four years ago in a house fire in Vermont," Rocco said coldly. "Except his bank records show three million dollars transferred into a Swiss account two weeks after my son was allegedly born. Transfers authorized by a shell company owned by Valentina’s brother, Julian Vance."

Dr. Giuliano sank into an armchair, covering his face with his hands. "God forgive us... they didn't kill the child, Rocco. They hid him."

"Why?" Elena whispered from the bed, her eyes wide with horror as she looked down at the peaceful infant. "Why would a mother hide her own baby and pretend he died?"

"Because he wasn't her baby," a small voice spoke up from the hearth.

Everyone in the room turned to look at Sophia.

The eight-year-old girl held her notebook up, running a tiny index finger along a line she had drawn in pencil.

"When I was cleaning the study with Mama last month," Sophia said, her voice calm and matter-of-fact, "I found a paper behind the big rug. It had two names on it. It said St. Helena Adoption Registry - Surrogate 09."

Rocco’s breath caught in his throat. He crossed the room in three long strides, dropping to his knees beside Sophia’s footstool.

"What else did the paper say, Sophia?" Rocco asked, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped sledgehammer. "Tell me."

Sophia closed her eyes, remembering. "It had a picture of a pretty lady with brown hair. Not yellow hair like Mrs. Valentina. And it said the lady lived in a place called Glen Cove."

Rocco’s mind raced through the maze of deceit that had governed his life for nearly a decade.

Sixteen years ago, before he consolidated his power over the city, Rocco had been arranged to marry Valentina Vance to merge the Moretti syndicate with the influential Vance political family. But Valentina had been secretly infertile—a fact her family concealed to ensure the marriage went through.

If Valentina could not produce a male heir, the Moretti succession would pass to Rocco’s ruthless cousin, Dante Moretti.

To secure her position as the queen of the estate, Valentina had secretly hired a surrogate mother eight years ago. But when the surrogate gave birth to a boy, Valentina realized a DNA test would eventually prove the child carried Rocco’s blood, but not hers. If Rocco discovered her medical lie, he would have annulled the marriage and ruined the Vance family.

So she faked the baby's death. She hid the child away.

"She kept my son hidden for eight years," Rocco whispered, the absolute horror of the truth settling into his marrow. "She paid off the doctors, paid off the guards... and kept my heir in the dark."

"But Boss," Marco broke in from the doorway, "if your firstborn was taken eight years ago... who is this baby?"

Rocco looked down at the infant sleeping on his bed.

The newborn child wrapped in the cream blanket—the baby Valentina had tried to toss into the trash chute like a piece of unwanted garbage just hours ago.

"This baby is three days old," Dr. Giuliano whispered, realization dawning on his face like a cold wave. "Rocco... eight years ago, the surrogate gave birth to your son. But what if... what if the surrogate wasn't done?"

Rocco stood up, his face pale as ivory, his dark eyes burning with apocalyptic fury.

"The surrogate didn't just have one child," Rocco realized, his voice trembling with a terrifying power. "Valentina kept the surrogate captive. She’s been using my stolen money to keep that poor woman locked away for eight years... breeding heirs to keep me controlled."

"And when this second baby was born three days ago," Marco added, "Valentina panicked. She couldn't hide two boys. So she tried to dispose of the newborn before you ever knew he existed."

Rocco turned toward Sophia.

The little girl who had walked into his grand dining room carrying a crying newborn, holding a three-dollar notebook filled with child's handwriting.

"Sophia," Rocco said, reaching out to gently touch the little girl's curly hair. "You didn't just find a baby tonight."

May you like

"What did I find, Mr. Rocco?" she asked softly.

"You found my blood," Rocco said, tears finally breaking past his hardened eyes. "You found my family."
