Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

By dawn, the rain had cleared, leaving the sky over Long Island a bruised shade of purple and slate gray.

The Moretti estate was on high alert. Armed guards in dark tactical suits stood at fifty-yard intervals along the perimeter fence. Snipers were positioned on the roof, their optical scopes scanning the treeline that bordered the estate.

In the grand dining room downstairs, a war council had assembled.

Sitting around the long mahogany table were the six most powerful Capos in New York—men who controlled the docks, the transport lines, the unions, and the construction syndicates. At the head of the table sat Rocco Moretti, wearing a dark suit, his face carved from ice.

Sitting on his right side—an unprecedented honor that shocked every Capo in the room—was little Sophia Bellini, dressed in a clean navy-blue dress, her notebook resting on the polished table before her.

"Gentlemen," Rocco announced, his voice cutting through the tense murmur of the room. "As of three o'clock this morning, my wife, Valentina Vance, is no longer associated with this family. She is a traitor to the Moretti name."

A violent ripple of surprised chatter went around the table.

Frankie "The Bull" Corradi, a massive man with scars across his jaw, slammed his fist onto the wood. "Rocco! What the hell are you talking about? Valentina’s father controls the State Senate! Her brother controls the port authority! If you drop the Vance family, we lose half our logistics protection!"

"She stole my son," Rocco said flatly.

The room went dead silent.

"Eight years ago," Rocco continued, his eyes scanning each Capo's face, "she faked the death of my heir. She hid him away. And last night, she tried to murder my second newborn son by throwing him into the trash behind my kitchen."

Gasps echoed across the room.

"Who proved this?" demanded Sal Valenti, an older Capo with sharp gray eyes. "You're taking the word of a rogue rumor over a political alliance?"

Rocco leaned forward, placing his heavy hands flat on the table.

"I am taking the word of this child," Rocco said, pointing to Sophia. "And the official records she recovered from my own house."

Sal Valenti looked down at the eight-year-old girl sitting calmly among the most dangerous mobsters in the state.

"A maid's kid?" Sal scoffed, shaking his head. "Rocco, you've lost your mind! You're going to start a syndicate war with the Vance family because a eight-year-old girl claims she smelled rose perfume?!"

Sophia picked up her pencil.

She didn't look scared. She opened her notebook, turned to a folded map of the estate she had drawn in colored crayons, and slid it toward Sal Valenti.

"At 1:15 a.m.," Sophia said, her small voice clear and firm, "Mr. Sal’s silver Mercedes parked in the rear garage. He didn't go to the main gate. He met Mrs. Valentina near the green garden house. He gave her a black bag."

Sal Valenti froze. The color drained from his face as if he had been struck by lightning.

"What... what nonsense is this?!" Sal spluttered, scrambling backward in his leather chair. "She’s lying! She’s making it up!"

"I am not lying," Sophia said quietly. "You dropped your gold cigar cutter in the grass near the hydrangeas. Mama found it when she was sweeping at 5:00 a.m. It has your initials on it: S.V."

Sophia reached into her small dress pocket and set a heavy, gold-plated cigar cutter onto the mahogany table. It clinked against the wood with the heavy sound of absolute proof.

The five other Capos turned instantly toward Sal Valenti, their hands moving reflexively toward their shoulder holsters.

Rocco stood up slowly.

"Sal," Rocco murmured, his dark eyes locked onto the traitor. "You helped her."

"Rocco! Wait! Listen to me!" Sal screamed, panic breaking his voice as Marco and two heavy guards stepped up behind his chair. "Valentina promised me the Brooklyn piers! She said you were getting old, that you were soft! She said the Vance family was taking over!"

"Take him down to the cellar," Rocco ordered coldly. "Do not kill him yet. He is going to tell us where Julian Vance is holding my eight-year-old boy."

Sal Valenti wept and screamed as he was dragged out of the dining room, his boots scraping helplessly against the polished floor.

When the double doors slammed shut, Rocco turned back to the remaining Capos.

"The Vance family thinks they can butcher my blood and take my empire," Rocco declared, his voice echoing off the high gilded ceiling. "Today, we tear them out by the roots."

He looked down at Sophia, who was calmly putting her gold cigar cutter back into her pocket and picking up her pencil.

"Sophia," Rocco said softly.

May you like

"Yes, Mr. Rocco?"

"Get your coat," the mob boss ordered, a dark, fierce glint in his eye. "You're coming with me to Glen Cove."
