Chapter 8 - The Shadow's Last Whisper

Three years passed in peace and prosperity.
The Moretti Foundation had built three children's hospitals across the state, including a complete overhaul of St. Helena Private Hospital, turning it into a beacon of free pediatric care.
Leo was now twelve years old, excelling in his studies and training in martial arts alongside Marco. Little Anthony was a energetic four-year-old who spent his days chasing Biscotti the cat through the rose-free gardens.
Sophia, now eleven, was attending a prestigious academy in Manhattan, recognized as a prodigy in logistics and analytical strategy.
However, in the dark corners of the state prison system, an old ember of hate still flickered.
It was a cold October evening when Marco entered Rocco’s study, holding an encrypted police wiretap transcript.
"Boss," Marco said quietly. "Dante Moretti—your cousin who was exiled to Chicago five years ago—has made contact with Valentina Vance’s former guards."
Rocco looked up from his desk. His hair had a few silver strands at the temples now, but his eyes were as sharp as ever.
"What does Dante want, Marco?"
"Dante believes that with Valentina in prison, he can claim the old Vance political assets," Marco explained. "He’s hired three hitmen from the Midwest. They’re planning to intercept the school transport near the Hudson Parkway tomorrow morning."
Rocco’s jaw set into stone. "They're targeting the children again?"
"Yes," Marco nodded. "Dante thinks if he takes Leo, he can force you to sign over the shipping docks in Brooklyn."
Before Rocco could answer, the study door opened, and eleven-year-old Sophia walked in.
She wasn't carrying a toy notebook anymore. She carried a slim digital tablet loaded with real-time estate security feeds and transport satellite tracking.
"They won't take the Parkway, Mr. Rocco," Sophia said calmly, tapping the screen.
Rocco looked at her. "Why do you say that, Sophia?"
"Because Dante’s driver, Frankie Jr., registered a black sedan at a gas station near Route 9 twenty minutes ago," Sophia explained, showing the camera footage on her tablet. "I set an automatic license-plate flag on all former Vance associates three years ago. They’re setting an ambush at the bridge, not the parkway."
Rocco stared at the eleven-year-old girl, amazement and immense gratitude filling his chest once again.
"Marco," Rocco said, turning to his security chief with a grim, decisive smile. "Reroute the school detail through the private subway tunnel. And send the tactical team to Route 9. It’s time we end Dante’s ambitions once and for all."

The ambush at Route 9 was caught in a trap prepared by Marco’s forces before Dante’s men even drew their weapons. Dante Moretti and his hired mercenaries were arrested by state police without a single shot fired near the children.
The last threat to the Moretti family was erased forever.
