Chapter 9 - The Garden of Truth

Spring returned to the Long Island coast, splashing the estate grounds with vibrant green lawns, pink cherry blossoms, and blue ocean views.
A massive celebration was underway.
It was a double event: Rocco’s fiftieth birthday and the formal adoption ceremony that legally made Clara Rossi and her sons an official part of the Moretti family, while legally naming Sophia Bellini as Rocco’s official ward and heir-equal.
Over two hundred guests filled the glass pavilion on the cliff overlooking the ocean—business leaders, community organizers, doctors, teachers, and loyal estate staff.
At the center altar, surrounded by white lilies and baby's breath, stood Rocco, wearing a dark blue suit, holding Clara’s hand as a judge read the official adoption decree.
"By the power vested in me by the State of New York," the judge announced with a warm smile, "I declare this family whole, protected, and legally bound under the law."
The crowd erupted into warm, enthusiastic applause.
Leo and little Anthony hugged their mother, while Rocco pulled Clara into a sweet, deep embrace.
Then Rocco stepped up to the microphone on the podium.
He looked out over the crowd, his gaze settling on Sophia, who stood near the front row beside her mother, Elena.
"Many years ago," Rocco spoke into the microphone, his deep voice carrying over the quieted crowd, "I believed that power was built with iron, money, and walls. I believed that fear was the only way to keep a home safe."
He smiled, his eyes shining with emotion.
"I was wrong," Rocco said softly. "My life was saved—my family was saved—not by soldiers or weapons, but by an eight-year-old girl holding a crooked pencil and a three-dollar notebook."
He gestured for Sophia to come up to the podium.
Sophia walked up the wooden steps, her posture confident, her smile bright and serene.
Rocco reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.
He opened it, revealing a beautiful gold pendant shaped like a open book, with a small emerald set in the center.
Engraved on the back were the words:
May you like
SOPHIA — THE TRUTH THAT SAVED US.
Rocco placed the necklace around her neck, hugging her tightly as the crowd stood up in a massive, roaring standing ovation.
