Chapter 5 - The Woman in the Tower

While Rocco held his long-lost son in the sunlit playroom, Sophia walked quietly past the emotional reunion, her eyes scanning the far corner of the subterranean suite.

Behind a heavy velvet curtain at the back of the playroom was a second wooden door, unlocked and slightly ajar.

Sophia pushed it open with her foot.

Inside was a small, clean medical bedroom. Sitting on the edge of a wide bed, dressed in a simple cotton gown, was a young woman with long, dark brown hair and soft, gentle hazel eyes.

Her wrists bore light fading scars from soft restraints. Her face was pale, thin, but filled with a quiet, incredible dignity.

In her lap, she held a small wooden framed picture of two newborn babies.

Sophia stepped into the room, her small shoes making a soft patter on the rug.

"Hello," Sophia said gently.

The woman looked up, startled, her hazel eyes filling with sudden tears as she saw the little girl standing in her doorway.

"Who... who are you?" the woman whispered, her voice weak from years of isolation.

"I’m Sophia," the girl answered, walking over and sitting down on the edge of the footstool beside the bed. "I found your baby last night."

The woman gasped, dropping the picture frame, her hands flying to her mouth as a sob wracked her thin frame.

"My... my baby?" she wept. "The newborn? Is he alive?! Did she kill him?!"

"He’s safe," Sophia assured her, reaching out her small hand to touch the woman's arm. "He’s at Mr. Rocco’s house. He’s sleeping in cashmere blankets. He had warm milk."

The woman fell to her knees on the rug, weeping tears of intense, overwhelming relief, clutching Sophia’s small hands against her face.

"Thank God... oh God, thank you..." she sobbed.

Rocco stepped into the room, carrying eight-year-old Leo in his arms.

When Rocco saw the woman kneeling on the floor, his eyes widened with shock.

"Clara..." Rocco breathed.

Clara Vance—formerly Clara Rossi—was Valentina’s younger cousin, a quiet art student who had mysteriously vanished from Manhattan nine years ago. The Vance family had claimed she had moved to Europe to study painting.

In reality, Valentina and Julian had trapped Clara, using her as an unwilling surrogate to produce pure Moretti heirs while keeping her imprisoned in the Glen Cove estate for nearly a decade.

Clara looked up at Rocco, her tears flowing freely.

"Rocco..." Clara whispered. "They told me you were dead. They said if I didn't give them the children, they would kill Leo... I stayed in this room for eight years to protect him."

Rocco felt a rage so immense it nearly blinded him, but looking at his son, looking at Clara, and looking at the little girl who had uncovered it all, the rage turned into an unbreakable vow of protection.

He reached down with his free arm, lifting Clara gently to her feet.

"It’s over, Clara," Rocco declared softly. "The nightmare is over. You and the boys are coming home."

Outside in the hallway, Valentina Vance was being led away in handcuffs by federal agents who had arrived alongside Rocco’s intelligence team. As she passed the doorway, her eyes locked onto Clara, Leo, and Rocco standing together like a real family.

Valentina opened her mouth to scream an insult, but Marco stepped in front of her, shutting the heavy steel door in her face forever.
