Chapter 4 - The Shadow of Knox County

The morning brought a deceitful, brilliant sunshine that washed over the manicured lawns of the Moretti estate, burning away the midnight fog.

By 8:00 AM, the transformation of our lives was already in full motion.

I woke up in the high canopy bed to the sound of soft laughter. I sat up instantly, my heart racing, only to find Emma sitting on a plush velvet rug near the window, wearing a brand-new pastel pink dress, playing with an elaborate wooden dollhouse that looked like it belonged in a museum.

Standing by the open wardrobe was Mrs. Gable, the mansion’s stern, silver-haired head housekeeper.

"Good morning, Maya," Mrs. Gable said, her usual crisp, formal demeanor softened by a rare, gentle smile.

"Mrs. Gable!" I scrambled out of bed, smoothing down my wrinkled clothes. "I am so sorry, I overslept—I need to get down to the kitchen—"

"You are not going to the kitchen, child," Mrs. Gable interrupted firmly, waving a hand. "Mr. Moretti’s orders. You are no longer on the domestic staff roster."

I froze. "What?"

Mrs. Gable walked over, placing a soft, cream-colored wool sweater and dark trousers on the foot of the bed. "Mr. Moretti has appointed you as the Assistant Curator of the West Wing Library and Archives. Starting today, your salary is doubled, paid directly into a private account created under a secure trust."

My mouth opened, but no words came out. "Curator? I... I don't have a degree in curation—"

"You have spent three years organizing his personal collection of rare Italian history books in your spare time, haven't you?" Mrs. Gable noted dryly, a warm sparkle in her eyes. "He noticed. He notices everything."

She turned toward Emma, who was happily arranging tiny wooden chairs inside the dollhouse. "And two tailors from Manhattan will be arriving at two o'clock to fit Emma for her new wardrobe. Now, dress yourself. Mr. Moretti is waiting for you in the sunroom for breakfast."

Ten minutes later, dressed in the soft wool sweater and trousers—clothing that felt ridiculously luxurious against my skin—I walked down the grand staircase, holding Emma’s small hand.

The sunroom was a glass-domed rotunda overflowing with tropical ferns, white orchids, and lemon trees. A round marble table was set with silver pots of coffee, fresh fruit, warm croissants, and eggs.

Alessandro sat at the table, wearing a dark grey suit, reading a broadsheet newspaper.

When he saw us enter, he immediately folded the paper and set it down, standing up from his chair.

"Good morning, Maya. Good morning, Emma," he said.

"Morning, Mr. Alessandro!" Emma chirped, running straight toward the table, completely unbothered by the imposing man in front of her. "Look! I have pockets in my dress!"

A genuine, warm laugh erupted from Alessandro’s chest—a sound so rare and startling that two guards standing near the glass doors visibly twitched in surprise.

"Pockets are very important," Alessandro agreed gravely, pulling out a chair for her. "Especially for storing stolen croissants."

I sat down across from him, feeling an odd, fluttering warmth in my chest that I tried desperately to suppress. "Mr. Moretti, this is too much. The clothes, the job... you don't have to do this."

"I do," Alessandro said, pouring black coffee into a porcelain cup for me. "And it’s not 'Mr. Moretti' anymore, Maya. When we are inside these walls, it’s Alessandro."

Before I could process the intimacy of his words, Marcus stepped into the sunroom. His face was grim, carrying a heavy leather tablet in his hand.

"Alessandro," Marcus said, his voice clipped. "We have a situation."

Alessandro’s posture instantly hardened. "Speak."

Marcus glanced at me, then at Emma, hesitating.

"Maya stays," Alessandro commanded flatly. "Report."

Marcus tapped the screen of the tablet and set it on the table in front of Alessandro. "Julian Cole didn't waste any time. He spent the last six hours reaching out to his contacts in law enforcement databases across the Midwest. Three hours ago, a high-priority inquiry was flagged in the Knox County Sheriff’s system."

My breath hitched in my throat. The croissant in my hand fell onto the plate.

"Ethan," I whispered, the terror rising like hot bile in my throat.

"Ethan Vance," Marcus confirmed, reading off the tablet screen. "Deputy Sheriff, Knox County, Ohio. Julian Cole sent him a secure dossier containing a photograph of Maya taken at the gala last night, along with the GPS coordinates of the Moretti estate."

I pulled Emma into my lap, burying my face in her soft hair, my whole body trembling. "He knows. Oh God, he knows where we are..."

"What did Vance do when he received the dossier?" Alessandro asked, his voice chillingly calm.

"He filed an emergency interstate felony warrant for parental abduction," Marcus reported. "He’s currently on a private charter flight from Columbus to Teterboro Airport. He lands in forty-five minutes. He has two federal marshals with him who are unaware of the context—they just think they’re assisting an officer in retrieving a kidnapped child."

"He’s using the law," I sobbed, clutching Emma tightly. "That’s what he always promised he’d do. He told me the system would always believe a deputy over a runaway wife."

Alessandro didn't panic. He didn't raise his voice.

He slowly took a sip of his coffee, set the cup down, and looked at Marcus.

"Is the Cole family’s main offshore holding account still frozen by our European team?" Alessandro asked.

"Yes," Marcus replied. "Julian can't move a single dollar."

"Good," Alessandro said softly. He stood up, adjusting his cuffs. "Marcus, order three cars to the front courtyard. Tell Dr. Lucian to prepare the legal documentation for Emma’s emergency guardianship."

"Guardianship?" I gasped, looking up at him in shock.

May you like

Alessandro looked down at me, his dark eyes ablaze with a cold, brilliant fury that sent a shiver through my soul.

"Deputy Vance thinks he can use the law to take your daughter, Maya," Alessandro said, extending his hand to me. "He is about to find out that in New York, I am the law."
