Chapter 9 - The Unexpected Gift

Three months after the grand gala, the quiet peace of the Moretti estate was filled with a new kind of anticipation.

It was a warm, lazy Sunday afternoon in July.

Alessandro sat in the sunroom, wearing a soft white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, going through estate blueprints with Marcus. Emma was sitting on the floor beside him, busily building a massive tower out of colorful wooden blocks.

I walked into the sunroom slowly, carrying a small silver tray. On the tray sat two cups of tea and a small, white velvet box tied with a satin ribbon.

My face was flushed, my heart fluttered with a sweet, nervous excitement.

Alessandro looked up instantly, his sharp eyes picking up on my slight hesitation. He immediately set the blueprints aside.

"Maya?" he asked, standing up. "Are you feeling okay? You looked pale at breakfast."

"I’m feeling wonderful, Alessandro," I smiled, setting the tray on the marble table.

He looked at the small white box sitting beside the teacups. "What’s this?"

"Open it," I whispered.

Emma scrambled to her feet, running over to the table. "Is it a present? Is it a toy?"

Alessandro looked at me, a curious, tender warmth in his eyes. He picked up the velvet box, untied the ribbon, and lifted the lid.

Inside rested a tiny, hand-knit pair of white baby booties, alongside a certified medical report from Dr. Lucian’s office timestamped from two hours ago.

Alessandro froze.

The man who could navigate hostile corporate takeovers without blinking a single eye stood completely motionless, staring down at the tiny white booties as if he were looking at the rarest treasure in the universe.

His hands—large, strong hands that had held power for a decade—began to tremble slightly.

"Maya..." he whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. "Are you...?"

"Twelve weeks," I said, tears of happiness filling my eyes. "Dr. Lucian confirmed it this morning. We’re having a baby, Alessandro."

A sound that was half-gasp, half-sob escaped Alessandro’s chest.

He dropped the box onto the table, stepped forward, and pulled me into his arms, lifting me off my feet, swinging me around the sunroom as his deep, joyous laughter filled the glass dome.

"A baby!" Emma squealed, jumping up and down, clapping her hands. "I’m gonna be a big sister! Mama, is it a real baby, or a pillow?!"

Alessandro set me down gently, dropping to his knees on the floor, pulling both Emma and me into a fierce, tight embrace.

"It’s a real baby, sweetie," Alessandro choked out, burying his face in my neck, tears of pure, unbridled joy dampening my skin. "A real, beautiful baby."

He pulled back slightly, looking up at me, his dark eyes shining with an intensity of love that filled every corner of my soul.

"Thank you, Maya," he whispered softly, kissing my lips with a tenderness that made the world melt away. "Thank you for giving me a real family."
