Chapter 8 - The Gala of the Truth

One year later.

The grand ballroom of the Moretti mansion was bathed in the warm, glittering light of twelve crystal chandeliers.

Outside, a soft, gentle spring rain tapped against the high glass windows, reflecting the fairy lights hung throughout the manicured gardens.

Inside, three hundred guests had gathered—the same elite circle of diplomats, judges, business leaders, and family heads who had stood in this room sixteen months ago during the infamous "pillow scandal."

But tonight, the atmosphere was entirely different.

The air smelled of fresh jasmine, white roses, and vintage champagne. The string quartet played a joyful, sweeping waltz near the terrace.

At the head of the grand marble staircase stood Alessandro Moretti, looking breathtakingly handsome in a bespoke black tuxedo.

Beside him stood I.

I wore a sweeping, ivory silk gown with long lace sleeves, my dark hair styled in an elegant updo anchored by a delicate pearl comb. Around my neck rested a simple, breathtaking emerald pendant—a Moretti family heirloom passed down through three generations.

Standing between us, holding both of our hands, was four-year-old Emma, wearing a matching white flower-girl dress, her dark curls bouncing as she giggled.

The room erupted into genuine, thunderous applause as Alessandro raised his champagne glass.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Alessandro’s deep voice echoed across the vaulted ballroom, commanding total silence. "Sixteen months ago, a very wise young lady stood in this room and taught us all a lesson about truth."

The crowd let out a warm, affectionate laugh, many guests raising their glasses toward Emma.

"Tonight," Alessandro continued, looking down at me with an expression of such pure, unadulterated love that my heart swelled to bursting, "we celebrate a new beginning. Not a business merger. Not a political alliance. But a family."

He turned to me, lifting my hand to his lips, kissing my knuckles gently.

"To my wife, Maya," Alessandro announced, his voice ringing clear and strong. "The queen of my heart, and the true master of this house."

The crowd cheered, clinking their glasses together in a joyful toast.

Standing near the perimeter wall, Mrs. Gable wiped a tear from her eye with a lace handkerchief, while Marcus stood beside her, offering a rare, wide grin.

Julian Cole and Vanessa Cole were nowhere to be found—Julian was currently serving a twelve-year sentence in a federal penitentiary for fraud, while Vanessa had relocated to a small village in southern France, living off a modest allowance provided by her distant relatives, completely stripped of her Manhattan status.

Ethan Vance was serving a seven-year sentence in Ohio for corruption and perjury, his police credentials permanently revoked.

The shadows that had hunted us for years were gone, completely erased by the light of the man standing beside me.

Alessandro pulled me close, wrapping his arm around my waist, his lips brushing against my ear. "Are you happy, my love?"

May you like

I looked around the grand room, then down at our daughter who was currently trying to feed a strawberry to Marcus, and finally up into the dark, loving eyes of my husband.

"I’m home, Alessandro," I whispered, leaning my head against his shoulder. "I’m finally home."
