Chapter 7 - The Shift in the House

By late October, the Moretti estate had changed completely.
The cold, oppressive atmosphere that had hung over the mansion for three years was gone, replaced by the soft, warm rhythms of a real home.
Emma’s laughter echoed through the high marble corridors every afternoon. She had claimed the grand gardens as her personal playground, chasing the mansion’s two golden retrievers across the manicured lawns under the watchful, affectionate eyes of Alessandro’s security team.
I had fully stepped into my role as Curator, spending my mornings cataloging rare manuscripts in the West Wing and my afternoons managing the estate’s domestic operations—no longer as a maid, but as the mistress of the house in all but title.
The staff no longer called me "Maya." They addressed me with quiet, deep respect as "Ms. Doyle."
And Alessandro...
Alessandro had changed most of all.
The cold, unapproachable king of the East Coast now returned home every evening at five o'clock sharp—unheard of for a man running a billion-dollar empire. He spent his evenings sitting on the floor of the living room, letting Emma paint his fingernails with washable glitter polish, or reading bedtime stories to her in French and Italian.
One crisp, autumn evening, after Emma had fallen asleep, I stood on the wide stone terrace overlooking the Hudson River.
The cool night air smelled of woodsmoke and crushed fallen leaves.
A warm, heavy wool coat was gently draped over my shoulders from behind.
I turned to see Alessandro standing beside me, wearing a simple black cashmere sweater, holding two glasses of red wine. He handed one to me.
"Thank you," I said softly, pulling the coat tight around myself. It smelled of him—cedarwood and rain.
"You look peaceful tonight, Maya," Alessandro said, leaning his forearms against the stone balustrade, looking out at the glittering lights of the river.
"I am," I admitted, taking a sip of the rich wine. "For the first time in my life, I don't wake up in the middle of the night checking the locks on the doors."
Alessandro turned his head to look at me, his profile sharp and handsome in the moonlight. "You never have to check a lock again, Maya. As long as I am breathing, you and Emma are safe."
I looked at him, my heart doing a strange, fluttering flip in my chest. "Why did you do all of this, Alessandro? Really? It wasn't just because Emma saved you from a bad merger."
Alessandro set his wine glass down on the stone ledge. He stepped closer to me, closing the distance until I could feel the heat radiating from his body in the cool night air.
"Do you remember the day you were hired, three years ago?" Alessandro asked softly.
I blinked, surprised. "Yes. I was terrified. I had fake references and fifty dollars in my pocket."
"I knew your references were fake ten minutes after you walked into my office," Alessandro revealed, a soft, genuine smile breaking across his lips. "Marcus brought me your real file that evening."
My mouth dropped open. "You knew?"
"I knew you were running from someone," Alessandro whispered, reaching out to tuck a loose strand of hair behind my ear. His fingers brushed against my neck, sending a jolt of pure electricity straight to my core. "I knew you were scared. But I saw the way you held your daughter in the kitchen when you thought no one was looking. I saw a woman who would tear the world apart to keep her child safe."
He stepped closer, his dark eyes burning with an intense, raw emotion that took my breath away.
"I fell in love with you three years ago, Maya," Alessandro confessed softly. "Standing in the doorway of the pantry, watching you sing a lullaby to Emma while scrubbing my floors."
My breath hitched in my throat. Tears blurred my eyes. "Alessandro..."
"I kept my distance because my world was dangerous," he continued, his voice trembling slightly. "I didn't want to drag you into the mud. But the night Vanessa pulled that stunt... the night Emma spoke up... I realized that my world was empty without you in it."
He cupped my cheek in his large, warm hand, his thumb softly stroking my cheekbone.
"I don't want to be your protector anymore, Maya," Alessandro whispered against my lips. "I want to be your husband. If you'll have me."
I didn't answer with words.
May you like
I stood on my tiptoes, wrapped my arms around his neck, and pulled his lips down to mine.
The kiss was deep, warm, and full of three years of unspoken longing, sweeping away every lingering shadow of the past, leaving only the brilliant, beautiful promise of the future.
