Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the Coles

The victory at Teterboro Airport did not signal the end of the war; it merely shifted the battlefield from the shadows of violence to the cold, merciless arena of high finance.

When we returned to the estate that evening, the mood inside the mansion was quiet, intense, and buzzing with electric energy.

I sat in the West Wing Library, holding a warm cup of tea, watching Emma color in a sketchbook on the low mahogany table.

The doors swung open, and Alessandro walked in, accompanied by two men wearing dark suits carrying heavy leather briefcases—his chief financial attorneys.

"How is she?" Alessandro asked, looking toward Emma.

"She fell asleep on the drive back, but she’s fine now," I said, standing up. "Alessandro... what happened to Ethan?"

"He is currently in a federal holding cell in Manhattan," Alessandro revealed, sitting on the edge of the large oak desk. "The District Attorney has charged him with federal affidavit fraud, interstate official misconduct, and obstruction of justice. He will never wear a badge again."

A massive, invisible weight that had been pressing down on my chest for four years suddenly vanished. I closed my eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath, tears of pure relief leaking down my cheeks.

"Thank you," I choked out. "Thank you..."

Alessandro stood up, walking across the room to stand directly in front of me. He reached out, his long fingers gently wiping a tear from my cheek. His touch was warm, soft, and sent a sudden, sweet shiver down my spine.

"You don't ever have to thank me, Maya," he whispered.

Before the moment could deepen, Marcus entered the library, carrying a secure satellite phone.

"Alessandro," Marcus said. "Julian Cole is on line one. He’s calling from his attorney’s office in Midtown. He’s begging for a settlement."

Alessandro’s face hardened instantly. "Put him on speaker."

Marcus pressed a button on the phone, setting it on the desk.

"Alessandro! Please!" Julian Cole’s panicked, desperate voice burst through the speaker. "Listen to me! We can fix this! The merger can still go through—we can restructure the terms! We’ll give the Moretti family eighty percent equity!"

Alessandro chuckled—a low, dark, terrifying sound. "Julian. You tried to use a corrupt small-town cop to kidnap a child from my house."

"I was desperate!" Julian screamed through the phone. "Vanessa lied to me too! She told me she was really pregnant! I didn't know about the pillow until last night!"

In the background of the call, a sharp scream could be heard—Vanessa shrieking at her brother in the legal office.

"Julian," Alessandro said smoothly, leaning over the phone. "Thirty minutes ago, my legal team bought ninety percent of your family's outstanding bank debt from the Swiss Syndicate. As of five minutes ago, I am your primary creditor."

Silence fell over the phone line.

"You... you bought our debt?" Julian whispered, his voice trembling with horror.

"I am foreclosing on your shipping fleet at midnight tonight," Alessandro stated flatly. "Your offices in Manhattan, your estate in Long Island, and your family's personal assets are being seized by federal marshals tomorrow morning. The Cole name is finished."

"Alessandro, please! We’ll have nothing! We’ll be bankrupt!"

"You won't be bankrupt, Julian," Alessandro corrected calmly. "You’ll be in prison. The federal auditors just received the complete unredacted ledgers of your offshore accounts. Have a good evening."

Alessandro motioned with his hand, and Marcus cut the call.

The silence that returned to the library was absolute.

I looked at Alessandro, awe and terror mixing in my chest. He had completely dismantled a multi-million-dollar dynasty in less than twenty-four hours without firing a single bullet.

"It’s over," I whispered.

May you like

Alessandro looked at me, his dark eyes softening as he looked from me to Emma.

"No, Maya," he said softly, walking closer to me, taking both of my hands in his. "The war is over. Our life is just beginning."
