Chapter 5 - The Teterboro Standoff

The private hangar at Teterboro Airport was dark, cold, and smelled heavily of aviation fuel and wet asphalt.
Outside, a private Gulfstream jet painted in slate grey taxied to a stop on the tarmac, its twin engines whining down into a low, high-pitched hum.
I sat in the back of Alessandro’s armored black Maybach, my hand locked in his. Emma was asleep in the adjacent seat, wearing noise-canceling headphones, clutching a plush velvet bear Alessandro had given her before we left the mansion.
Standing beside our vehicle were six black SUVs containing twelve of Alessandro’s top security operatives—all dressed in crisp suits, completely unbothered by the cold rain drizzling down from the grey overcast sky.
The stairs of the Gulfstream folded down.
Three men descended.
The man in the middle wore a dark brown leather jacket over a starched tan uniform shirt with a gold star pinned to the chest. He was tall, thick-set, with short-cropped blond hair and a heavy, square jaw.
Ethan.
Seeing him after four years sent a violent shockwave of panic through my system. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. My hand convulsed in Alessandro’s grip.
Alessandro felt it. He didn't let go. He squeezed my fingers, his touch firm, warm, and rock-steady.
"Stay in the car, Maya," Alessandro said softly, his voice devoid of any fear. "Watch through the glass."
"Alessandro, please," I begged, tears filling my eyes. "He’s ruthless. He doesn't care about rules—"
"Neither do I," Alessandro replied calmly.
He opened the door and stepped out into the rain.
Across the wet tarmac, Ethan Vance pulled his leather jacket tight around his shoulders, his eyes scanning the row of black SUVs with aggressive confidence. Walking beside him were two senior Federal Marshals carrying leather briefcases.
"Alessandro Moretti?" one of the Marshals called out, stepping forward, displaying his badge. "I’m Deputy Marshal Henderson. We are executing an interstate custody warrant issued by the State of Ohio for the immediate recovery of Emma Vance, and the arrest of Maya Vance for felony parental abduction."
Alessandro stood twenty feet away, his hands tucked casually into his trouser pockets, his tailored dark coat absorbing the light rain. Marcus stood half a step behind his left shoulder, holding a black umbrella over his head.
"You're on private property, Marshal," Alessandro said smoothly, his voice easily carrying across the tarmac.
Ethan Vance stepped past the marshals, his face contorting into an arrogant, sneering smile. "Where is she, Moretti? Where’s my wife and daughter? I know you’ve been hiding them in your mansion like your little personal playthings."
Alessandro didn't even look at Ethan. He kept his eyes fixed on Marshal Henderson.
"Marshal," Alessandro said calmly. "Do you know who Julian Cole is?"
Henderson frowned, pausing. "What does Julian Cole have to do with this warrant?"
"Julian Cole is currently under investigation by the Southern District of New York for corporate fraud, money laundering, and treason," Alessandro stated flatly. "Three hours ago, he illegally accessed a restricted law enforcement database to contact Deputy Vance here, offering him two hundred thousand dollars to initiate a false federal warrant to distract from his own arrest."
Ethan’s face went pale. "That’s a lie! I’m executing a legal custody warrant!"
"A custody warrant," Alessandro interrupted, finally turning his dark, lethal gaze onto Ethan, "for a marriage that was officially annulled in the State of New York two years ago on the grounds of severe domestic abuse."
Ethan spat on the pavement. "She didn't get an annulment! She ran away!"
Alessandro reached into his inner coat pocket and pulled out a thick, leather-bound blue folder. He tossed it through the air.
Marshal Henderson caught it cleanly. He flipped it open.
Inside were certified court orders from the New York Supreme Court, signed by the Chief Justice, declaring Maya’s marriage to Ethan Vance completely null and void ab initio, citing documented hospital records from Knox County detailing three separate instances of physical assault—records that Ethan’s local police department had tried to bury for four years.
Beside those papers was a second document: an official temporary adoption and protective guardianship order for Emma, signed by the Governor of New York less than ninety minutes ago.
Marshal Henderson’s eyes grew wider with every page he turned. He slowly turned his head to glare at Ethan.
"Vance," Henderson said, his voice dropping into a cold rage. "Did you lie on a federal affidavit?"
"The papers are fakes!" Ethan roared, drawing his service weapon from his hip holster. "She’s my daughter! I’m taking her back to Ohio today!"
The second Ethan’s gun cleared his holster, the ambient quiet of the hangar shattered.
Twelve vehicle doors flew open simultaneously.
Twelve laser sights—crimson red dots—instantly centered on Ethan Vance’s chest, neck, and forehead. Twelve heavily armed Moretti operatives stepped into the light, their submachine guns raised, their movements completely synchronized.
Ethan froze, his weapon pointed uselessly at the sky, his breath catching in his throat as he realized he was surrounded by a literal army.
"Drop the weapon, Deputy," Marshal Henderson ordered coldly, drawing his own sidearm and pointing it directly at Ethan’s head. "Drop it right now, or I will shoot you myself for federal perjury and unauthorized brandishing."
Ethan’s hands shook violently. The gun slipped from his fingers, clattering onto the wet asphalt.
Alessandro walked forward slowly, his shoes clicking against the wet ground, stopping just two feet from the trembling deputy.
Alessandro leaned in close, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying whisper that only Ethan could hear.
"You spent four years making her afraid of the dark, Ethan," Alessandro murmured, his dark eyes cold as a winter grave. "If I ever see your face in the State of New York again, I will make sure you disappear into a hole so deep the sun will forget you ever existed. Do you understand me?"
May you like
Ethan swallowed hard, unable to speak, his body shaking with unadulterated terror.
"Marshal," Alessandro said, stepping back, adjusting his tie. "Take this garbage out of my city."
