Chapter 4 - The Christmas Morning Awakening

The morning sun broke over the snowy peaks of the Rocky Mountains, flooding the Presidential Suite with brilliant gold light. The blizzard had cleared overnight, leaving Denver blanketed in a pristine layer of fresh white snow.

Luke was the first to wake up. He rubbed his eyes, pushed his fleece blanket aside, and sat up on the floor. His gaze landed on the towering Christmas tree in the corner of the grand living room. Beneath it sat dozens of brightly wrapped packages—boxes of all sizes, tied with silver and gold ribbons.

"Mama! Look!" Luke gasped in awe, clambering to his feet and running toward the tree.

Cassandra stirred on the master sofa, opening her eyes. She had fallen asleep with her head resting on Damon's chest, and his strong arm was securely wrapped around her waist.

Damon woke up instantly at the sound of Luke’s voice. He looked down at Cassandra, who was looking back at him, her cheeks slightly flushed.

"Merry Christmas, Cassie," Damon whispered softly, leaning down to press a gentle kiss to her temple.

"Merry Christmas, Damon," she replied, a genuine smile lighting up her face for the first time in years.

Violet woke up next, rubbing her little face with her stuffed elephant, and squealed with delight when she saw the mountain of presents under the tree.

"Damon... what did you do?" Cassandra asked, sitting up and looking at the impressive stack of gifts in astonishment. "The stores were closed last night!"

Damon gave a sheepish, dimpled smile. "I may have bribed the general manager of the Brown Palace and three local toy store owners to open their doors at three in the morning. A father has to make up for lost time."

"You are unbelievable," Cassandra laughed, shaking her head, though her heart warmed at the gesture.

For the next two hours, the grand suite was filled with the sounds of tearing paper, pure children's laughter, and joy. Luke received race cars, building blocks, and an entire art kit filled with every shade of red crayon imaginable. Violet squealed over plush animals, miniature doctor kits, and interactive storybooks.

Damon sat on the floor, surrounded by wrapping paper, patiently assembling a wooden train track with Luke, while Violet sat in his lap, insisting on placing colorful stickers on his expensive designer shirt.

Cassandra watched them from the sofa, sipping hot coffee, feeling a sense of peace she hadn't experienced in three long years. The dark clouds of anxiety, financial strain, and single motherhood seemed to evaporate in the warm air of the room.

Around noon, Damon’s phone rang. It was his personal security detail and private pilot. The airspace had reopened, and his private Gulfstream jet was prepped on the tarmac at Denver International Airport, ready to take them anywhere.

Damon hung up and looked at Cassandra. "Your sister is still stuck in Boulder—the state troopers said the mountain passes won't open until tomorrow evening. Come back to Seattle with me, Cassie. Just for the holiday week. Let me show you and the kids where I live. Let us be a family for a few days."

Cassandra hesitated. Moving from an unexpected airport encounter to flying on a private jet to his Seattle penthouse was a massive leap. "Damon, my job at the clinic in Portland... my apartment..."

"I will fly you anywhere you want, whenever you want," Damon promised, walking over and taking her hands into his. "I'm not trying to trap you, Cassie. I just want time. Time to prove to you that I can balance my life now. Please."

Cassandra looked at Luke, who was happily zooming a toy train across Damon’s leather shoe, and then at Violet, who was smiling as she combed the mane of a toy unicorn.

"Okay," Cassandra agreed softly. "Seattle."
