Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Boardroom

The flight on Damon’s luxury private jet to Seattle was seamless and filled with comfort. The children were mesmerized by the cloud views, and Damon spent every minute reading books to Violet and drawing elaborate track designs for Luke.

When they landed in Seattle, a sleek black limousine escorted them to Damon’s glass-and-steel penthouse overlooking Elliott Bay and the Space Needle. The penthouse was breathtakingly modern, but as Cassandra walked through the wide marble halls, she noticed how clinical and quiet it felt—like a luxury museum rather than a home.

"It's quiet," Cassandra remarked gently, looking at the pristine white walls and minimalist furniture.

"It was empty," Damon corrected, catching her eye. "Because the person who was supposed to design it with me wasn't here. But we can change all of that."

Over the next three days, Damon completely transformed his routine. The CEO who normally worked sixteen-hour days and answered emails at two in the morning turned off his phone. He cooked breakfast for the children, took them to the Seattle Aquarium, and spent hours walking through the snowy public parks with Cassandra, holding her hand under the gray winter sky.

The rift between them was healing rapidly. Old laughter returned, replaced by deep, mature conversations about their past mistakes, their fears, and their hopes for Luke and Violet.

However, storm clouds were gathering on the financial horizon.

On the morning of December 28th, while Cassandra was upstairs helping the kids paint, Damon walked into his private home office to find Nora Beck standing by his desk, her face pale and stressed.

"Damon, we have a major problem," Nora announced, dropping a thick legal dossier onto his desk.

Damon’s demeanor instantly hardened. "What is it?"

"Julian Calder isn't taking his defeat in Denver lightly," Nora explained quickly. "He’s retaliating. Calder Group bought a fifteen percent hostile stake in Prescott Technologies stock over the last seventy-two hours while the markets were low. And he’s allied himself with Victoria Thorne."

Damon’s eyes narrowed sharply at the name. Victoria Thorne was the lead board director of Prescott Technologies and a major shareholder who had always pushed Damon to maximize corporate profits over human ethics.

"What do Victoria and Calder want?" Damon asked coldly.

"They are filing an emergency motion with the board of directors to strip you of your CEO authority," Nora revealed, her voice shaking slightly. "They are claiming that your sudden fifty-million-dollar personal donation in Denver and your recent 'erratic behavior' prove you are emotionally compromised and unfit to lead a multi-billion dollar tech firm. They’re holding an emergency board vote on December 30th."

Damon leaned back against his desk, his jaw clenching. "They think because I reconnected with my family, I've become weak."

"They know you care about the pediatric foundation, Damon," Nora said earnestly. "If Victoria and Calder take control of the board, they will cancel the Merritt acquisition, shut down the non-profit foundation, and monetize the software. Everything you fought for in Denver will be destroyed."

Damon’s green eyes flashed with a dangerous, lethal fire. "They want a war? I’ll give them one. Get our legal team on the line. I want a complete audit of Calder Group's stock purchases by noon."

From the doorway of the office, Cassandra had been standing quietly, listening to the conversation. Her heart sank as she saw the familiar, dark corporate stress returning to Damon's face.

When Nora rushed out of the room to make calls, Cassandra walked in, her hands folded tightly together.

"So it's happening again," Cassandra said softly, her voice tinged with sadness.

Damon looked up, realizing she had heard everything. "Cassie, this isn't what you think. I'm not chasing greed. Julian Calder is trying to destroy the foundation I built for Clara, and he's trying to ruin my company."

"I know, Damon," Cassandra sighed, walking over to the window looking out over the chilly bay. "I know Calder is evil. But look at you. In five minutes, you transformed back into the warrior CEO. The corporate world will always have another battle, Damon. Another rival, another hostile takeover, another board vote. If every battle requires you to sacrifice your peace and your family, where does it end?"

Damon walked up behind her, placing his hands gently on her shoulders. "I am not sacrificing you, Cassie. Not this time. I am fighting to protect what we built. If I lose this board vote, Calder takes away the pediatric software that will save thousands of babies. I can't let him do that."

Cassandra turned around to look at him, tears reflecting in her eyes. "Then fight him, Damon. But fight him with us, not by locking us out."

Damon looked at her, deeply moved by her strength. "You're right. I won't hide this from you. Stand by my side, Cassie. Help me win this."
