Chapter 2 - The Silent Safe Haven

The private wing of the hospital was quiet, save for the soft hum of medical monitors. Ethan, Noah, and Liam had been treated for minor lacerations and were now fast asleep, exhausted from the trauma.
Richard sat in a chair by the window, his head buried in his hands. Emily stood by the door, still wearing her stained uniform, her yellow gloves finally stuffed into her pockets. She had refused to leave until she knew the boys were safe.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Richard asked quietly, breaking the silence. He didn't look up. "About Victoria. About what she said to them."
"Would you have believed me, sir?" Emily's voice was flat. "An hour ago, you threw me out on the street because she found a watch in my bag. You didn't ask for my side of the story. You assumed that because I am a housekeeper, my integrity has a price tag."
Richard flinched. The words hit him harder than any corporate betrayal ever could. "I was blind. She... she presented evidence. I was foolishly trying to provide a mother figure for them, and I let my guard down."
"A mother figure doesn't lock children in a room, Mr. Hawthorne. I told you a year ago that the boys were becoming withdrawn when she was around, but you told me to mind my boundaries."

Richard stood up and walked over to her. The distance between their social statuses felt immense, yet here she was, the only anchor keeping his family from drifting into tragedy. "I am sorry, Emily. More sorry than I can ever express. Please. Name your price. Come back. The boys need you. I need you to protect them."
Emily looked at the triplets, their breathing synchronized in sleep. Her heart ached for them. But she looked back at Richard, her expression firm. "I will come back for the boys, Mr. Hawthorne. But not as a servant you can discard whenever it's convenient. Things are going to change."
