Chapter 2 - The Shadow of Execution

Rachel froze. The warmth in her chest turned to ice, but she kept her body completely still so as not to wake the tiny baby resting against her collarbone. She looked at Mateo, then turned her wide, horrified eyes toward Daniel Russo.

"What did you just say?" Rachel’s voice was a barely audible whisper, laced with rising panic.

Daniel’s eyes narrowed instantly, his razor-sharp instincts kicking in. He noticed the sudden spike in Rachel’s pulse, the way her shoulders tensed beneath his infant son. He glanced sharply at Mateo.

"Who did you say was at the docks?" Daniel asked, his tone dropping an octave into pure, lethal command.

"Tommy Jenkins," Mateo said nervously, leaning closer to lower his voice. "The gambler who took fifty grand from our riverfront operation and defaulted. You signed off on his elimination at midnight, Boss."

Rachel let out a sharp, gasping sob. "No... no, oh God, no!"

She instinctively pulled Leo closer to her, backing away from Daniel as if he were a monster. The movement startled the baby, who let out a tiny, whimpering squeak.

"Rachel, don't move," Daniel commanded, taking a step toward her, his eyes locked on his son.

"Stay back!" Rachel choked out, tears brimming in her eyes. "Tommy is my brother! He’s my brother, do you hear me? He’s not a criminal, he’s just stupid and sick and addicted! Please, God, Mr. Russo, tell me you didn't kill him!"

The heavy air in the suite turned suffocating. Daniel stood frozen. The woman who had just saved his son's life, the only person in North America who could calm the dying infant, was the sister of the man he had ordered executed two hours prior.

"Mateo," Daniel barked, turning fiercely on his lieutenant. "Is the order executed?"

"The team pulled him into Warehouse 4 at 1:00 AM," Mateo said, pulling out his satellite phone with slick fingers. "Execution was scheduled for 1:15 AM. It's 1:18 now."

"Call them! NOW!" Daniel roared, a sound so violent that the hospital glass vibrated.

Mateo hastily dialed the encrypted line, pressing the phone to his ear. The silence in the room was agonizing. Rachel fell to her knees on the hard floor, keeping her chest leveled so Leo remained undisturbed, her face wet with frantic tears as she prayed silently.

"Pick up, damn it, pick up..." Mateo muttered.

On the third ring, a rough voice answered over the speaker. "It's done, Cruz. We're clearing out."

Rachel let out a agonizing, heartbroken shriek.

"Wait!" Mateo yelled into the phone. "Vince, report status! Is Jenkins dead?!"

"We were about to put two in his head, Cruz, but someone tipped off the Harbor Police. Cops crashed the front gates thirty seconds ago! We had to scatter. The mark is tied to a chair in the south bay, untouched!"

"Leave him! Abort the hit! Do you hear me? Touch a hair on his head and I will skin you myself!" Mateo screamed before disconnecting the call. He wiped sweat from his forehead and looked at Daniel. "He's alive, Boss. The police intercepted before my boys could pull the trigger."

Rachel slumped against the side of the hospital bed, sobbing hysterically in relief, her tears dripping onto her scrub top. Leo, feeling her tremors, let out a soft cry.

Daniel moved with astonishing swiftness. He dropped to one knee beside Rachel. His massive, suit-clad frame towered over her, but his hands were carefully gentle as he reached out, steadying her trembling shoulders without touching his son directly.

"He's alive, Rachel," Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly close and intense. "Your brother is breathing."

Rachel looked up into the face of the billionaire mob chief. "You... you were going to murder him over fifty thousand dollars?"

"It's not about fifty thousand dollars," Daniel said coldly, his mobster persona flashing through his exhaustion. "It's about order. But right now, the only thing that matters in this city is that my son is sleeping against your chest."

He stood up, looking down at her with a terrifying blend of power and desperation.

"You saved my son tonight," Daniel declared. "In return, your brother’s debt is erased. His life is spared. But you, Rachel Jenkins... you are not leaving this hospital. You belong to VIP Suite A now."
