Chapter 7 - The Traitor Revealed

Two days passed at the estate. Under the calm, secure atmosphere, Leo thrived. He began taking milk from a bottle fed by Rachel, gaining three ounces in forty-eight hours—a massive victory for a premature baby.
Meanwhile, Daniel worked tirelessly from his home office, dismantling Victor Vance’s rogue faction within the Russo organization.
On the third night, a breakthrough occurred.
Mateo entered Daniel’s study, carrying a decrypted flash drive recovered from Vance’s abandoned penthouse in downtown Chicago.
"Boss," Mateo said, his face grave. "We unlocked Vance’s encrypted emails. It’s worse than we thought."
Daniel leaned back in his leather chair, swirling a glass of scotch. "Tell me."
"Vance wasn't acting alone," Mateo revealed, placing documents on the desk. "He was bribed by an external investor group backed by the Moretti syndicate, but the person who authorised the hit from inside our organization wasn't just Vance."
Daniel’s eyes narrowed. "Who?"
"Your board of directors chairman... Arthur Sterling."
Daniel’s hand froze. Arthur Sterling was his late father’s oldest business partner, a man who had held Daniel at his baptism.
"Sterling wanted control of the freight yards," Mateo explained. "He knew that if you and Camille were wiped out, the Russo empire would fall into receivership under the board's control. When he found out the baby survived, he ordered Vance to finish the job at the hospital."
A terrifying, icy calm settled over Daniel. He set his glass down on the desk with a soft click.
"Where is Sterling now?" Daniel asked softly.
"He called an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM at the Russo Logistics headquarters downtown," Mateo answered. "He thinks you're hiding at the estate, paralyzed by grief."
Daniel stood up, buttoning his charcoal suit jacket. "Prepare the cars for tomorrow morning."
"Boss," Mateo hesitated. "Sterling has hired thirty armed mercenaries to secure the HQ building. It’s a trap."
"No," Daniel replied, a cold, predatory smile spreading across his face. "It's an execution."
Before leaving his study, Daniel walked upstairs to the nursery.
The room was quiet. Rachel was fast asleep on the bed, her face soft and peaceful in the moonlight. Tiny Leo was resting in a crib beside her, breathing steadily.
Daniel walked up to the side of the bed. He reached out and gently brushed a stray strand of hair away from Rachel’s forehead. Rachel stirred softly, opening her dark eyes, looking up at him in the dim light.
"Daniel?" she murmured sleepily.
"I have to go clear the last shadow from our lives," Daniel whispered, touching her cheek gently with his warm thumb.

Rachel reached up and placed her hand over his. "Promise me you'll come back."
Daniel leaned down, pressing a gentle, lingering kiss to her forehead. "I promise."
