Chapter 6 - The Sanctuary

St. Catherine’s Hospital was no longer safe.
Within forty minutes of the attack, a fleet of six armored black SUVs tore away from the hospital's underground garage under heavy escort.
Rachel found herself inside Daniel’s personal vehicle—a custom-built, bomb-proof limousine equipped with a portable medical suite. She sat in the plush leather seat, Leo wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket against her chest. Daniel sat across from her, his laptop open, issuing rapid, ruthless orders to his syndicate lieutenants across Chicago.
"Freeze all of Victor Vance’s accounts," Daniel commanded into his phone. "Lock down his properties. Hunt down every soldier loyal to him. I want Vance brought to me alive."
He hung up and looked at Rachel. The anger in his eyes faded, replaced by deep concern.
"We are going to my estate in Lake Forest," Daniel said softly. "It is a fortress. Wall-to-wall security, private medical equipment, and twenty armed guards who answered directly to my late father. You and Leo will be completely safe there."
"And my brother?" Rachel asked, her voice raspy from crying. "You promised he would be safe."
Daniel gestured to Mateo, who opened a video feed on an iPad and handed it to Rachel.
On the screen was Tommy, sitting in a plush living room of a suburban house, eating a sandwich while two large men in suits stood politely near the door. Tommy looked nervous, but he was completely unharmed.
"He is under my protection," Daniel said. "Once Victor Vance is eliminated and my house is clean, your brother’s debt will be formally erased, and he will receive treatment for his gambling addiction at a private clinic in California—all paid for by me."
Rachel stared at Daniel, overwhelmed by the dizzying contrast of his character. He was a ruthless mob boss who killed men without blinking, yet he was showing extraordinary generosity to her family.
"Why are you doing all this for me?" Rachel asked softly.
Daniel looked down at his sleeping son in her arms, then met her eyes with an intensity that made her breath catch.
"Because you did what millions of dollars and national medical experts couldn't do," Daniel said quietly. "You saved my child’s life. You gave me a reason to keep breathing after Camille died. There is nothing in this world I will not give you in return."
An hour later, the convoy pulled through the massive iron gates of the Russo Estate—a grand, sprawling stone mansion surrounded by acres of dense, fenced pine forests on the shores of Lake Michigan.
Rachel was escorted to the master suite on the second floor, which had been converted into a luxurious nursery. High-tech medical equipment sat quietly in the corner, but the room was warm, draped in soft cream fabrics and lit by gentle gold lamps.
For the first time in days, Rachel felt a wave of profound exhaustion wash over her. She sat on the king-sized bed, gently holding Leo, who was sleeping peacefully.
Daniel stood in the doorway, watching her.
"Rest, Rachel," Daniel said softly. "I will be right outside."
"Daniel," Rachel called out before he could close the door.
He paused. "Yes?"
May you like
"Be careful," she said gently.
A rare, beautiful smile touched the edges of Daniel’s hardened lips. "Always."
