Chapter 9 - A New Beginning

Three months later.

The dark clouds that had hung over the Russo empire had completely vanished. Victor Vance and Arthur Sterling’s faction had been thoroughly dismantled, their assets seized, and the threats against Daniel’s family erased permanently.

At the Russo Estate in Lake Forest, the atmosphere was transformed.

The sterile medical equipment in the master suite had been removed, replaced by beautiful hand-carved wooden toys, soft plush rugs, and giant windows open to the breezy blue waters of Lake Michigan.

Leo was now a healthy, chubby four-month-old baby weighing nearly fourteen pounds. His sensory hypersensitivity was completely cured, thanks to months of continuous skin-to-skin contact, love, and physical therapy guided by Rachel.

It was a warm Saturday afternoon. Rachel sat on a velvet blanket on the lush green lawn of the estate, watching Leo laugh as he kicked his tiny legs in the sunshine.

She wore a beautiful yellow summer dress, her brown hair falling softly around her shoulders. She looked healthy, radiant, and completely free of the crushing debt and fear that had once defined her life.

Tommy had successfully completed his first ninety days at the private rehab facility in California, clean and sober, and was now working as a junior manager at one of Daniel’s legitimate freight hubs in San Diego.

Footsteps sounded on the grass behind her.

Rachel turned to see Daniel walking toward them. He had shed his usual dark suit jacket, wearing a relaxed white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He looked younger, happier, the dark circles beneath his eyes long gone.

He sat down on the blanket beside Rachel, pulling Leo into his lap. Leo instantly giggled, grabbing his father's thumb with his tiny hand.

"He gained another four ounces this week," Rachel said with a proud smile. "Dr. Harrison says he’s completely on track with his growth milestones."

"Dr. Harrison is an idiot," Daniel joked softly, kissing Leo’s head. "He’s only on track because he has the most brilliant nurse in North America taking care of him."

Rachel flushed, looking away at the sparkling lake water.

"Rachel," Daniel said quietly.

She turned back to look at him. Daniel set Leo down on a soft pillow between them, then reached out, taking Rachel’s hands in his.

"Three months ago, you walked into a nightmarish hospital room facing a man who threatened your life," Daniel said, his voice rich with sincere emotion. "You had every reason to run away. Instead, you saved my son. You saved me from going completely dark."

"Daniel..." Rachel whispered, her heart beating fast.

"I cleared your brother's debt because I owed you a favor," Daniel continued, his blue eyes searching hers with profound tenderness. "I kept you at this estate because I needed to protect you. But now... the danger is gone. You are free to go wherever you want. I have set up a trust fund in your name that ensures you will never have to work another day in your life."

Rachel felt a sudden, sharp ache in her chest. The thought of leaving the estate, of leaving Leo, of leaving Daniel, felt unbearable.

"What if..." Rachel swallowed hard, her voice trembling slightly. "What if I don't want to leave?"

Daniel’s eyes flared with intense warmth. "What did you say?"

"I don't want your money, Daniel," Rachel said tears shining in her eyes. "I don't want to go back to my old life. I love Leo. And... I’ve fallen in love with you."
