Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Dark

Three days passed in a blur of hyper-vigilance.
Under Rachel’s constant care, Leo made miraculous strides. His weight stabilized, his oxygen levels remained in the mid-nineties, and he had learned to recognize Rachel’s voice. Whenever she spoke or sang, his heart rate settled into a smooth, rhythmic hum.
However, the strain on Rachel was taking a heavy physical toll. She hadn't left Suite A in seventy-two hours. She slept in short two-hour bursts on a sofa installed inside the suite, guarded constantly by Daniel’s armed men.
At 2:00 AM on the fourth night, Daniel entered the room carrying a silver tray. The aroma of rich beef stew and fresh sourdough bread filled the sterile air.
"You need to eat," Daniel said, setting the tray down on a small table near her chair.
Rachel looked at the food, then at him. "I can't eat while holding him."
Without a word, Daniel stepped closer. He looked down at his sleeping son, his hands trembling slightly. "Teach me."
Rachel blinked, surprised. "What?"
"Teach me how to hold him," Daniel said, his voice vulnerable for the first time. "I am his father. I cannot rely on you forever, Rachel. Show me how to touch my son without hurting him."
Rachel looked into his intense eyes and saw the raw, desperate heart of a grieving parent. Her anger toward his criminal empire softened slightly.
"Sit down," she instructed softly.
Daniel sat in the heavy armchair beside her. Rachel carefully guided his large, muscular arms into position. His skin was warm, but his muscles were rigid as steel.
"You have to relax, Mr. Russo," Rachel guided gently. "Babies sense tension. If you're stressed, his body will react to your stress."
She slowly unbuttoned his crisp linen shirt, exposing his chest. Daniel flushed slightly, unaccustomed to being instructed by anyone, let alone a nurse half his size.
"Now," Rachel said, carefully lifting the tiny, sleeping Leo from her chest and shifting him into Daniel’s arms. "Skin to skin. Put his head right over your heart."
The moment Leo touched his father's chest, the baby stirred. His little eyebrows furrowed, and a quiet whimpering sound escaped his lips.
Daniel stiffened in panic. "He's going to scream. He hates me."
"Shh," Rachel whispered, gently placing her hand over Daniel’s hand, guiding his palm onto Leo’s tiny back. "Don't pull away. Hold him firmly so he feels safe. Breathe slowly."
Rachel began to sing her soft lullaby, her voice sweet and soothing in the quiet room.
Daniel closed his eyes, taking deep, slow breaths as instructed. Beneath his palm, he felt the tiny beat of his son's heart matching his own. Leo relaxed, burying his tiny face against his father’s chest, falling back into a deep, peaceful sleep.
Tears sprang to Daniel’s eyes. A single drop escaped, trailing down his scarred cheek. He looked up at Rachel, his hand still beneath hers on the baby's back.
"Thank you," Daniel whispered, his voice thick with unexpressed grief. "For the first time since my wife died... I feel like he might actually make it."
Rachel smiled gently, her heart fluttering unexpectedly at the closeness between them. For a brief second, the terrifying mob boss was just a man loving his motherless son.
Suddenly, the silent alarm on the suite door flashed red.

The glass door slid open violently, and Mateo rushed in, his face pale, drawing a silenced pistol from his coat.
"Boss! We have a breach!" Mateo yelled. "Power to the fourth floor just got cut!"
