Chapter 5 - The Night of Burning Ice

The conflict between the Moretti family and the Falco syndicate erupted into open war over the next forty-eight hours.
Seattle was bathed in tension. Sirens echoed through the waterfront districts at night, blacked-out SUVs moved quietly through the rain, and the estate became a fortress locked down under maximum security. Armed guards were stationed at every entrance, and the gates remained closed.
Despite the chaos outside, Clara kept Isabella calm, keeping her insulated from the violence threatening their borders.
It was late on Sunday night.
A heavy rainstorm was beating against the windows of the estate. Thunder rolled across the sky, shaking the glass panes.
Clara was sitting in the estate’s medical room, organizing Isabella’s chart for the upcoming week. The house was eerie quiet. Isabella had gone to bed hours ago under the care of a night nurse, and most of the security detail had been deployed to the docks to secure the family's assets.
Suddenly, the heavy door of the medical room burst open.
Clara gasped, jumping up from her chair.
Lorenzo stumbled into the room.
His white shirt was ripped open at the shoulder, soaked in dark, crimson blood. His face was pale, smeared with rain and soot, his chest heaving as he leaned heavily against the doorframe to keep from collapsing.
"Lorenzo!" Clara screamed, rushing across the room.
She caught him just as his knees buckled. His massive frame leaned heavily against her, his blood warm and metallic as it soaked through her light blue blouse. She managed to support his weight, guiding him toward the medical examination table in the center of the room.
Lorenzo collapsed onto the padded table, letting out a sharp, choked groan of agony.
"Mateo..." Lorenzo rasped, his eyes barely open. "Is Mateo... outside?"
"There's no one here!" Clara said, her adrenaline surging. She pulled open his shirt, revealing a deep, jagged gunshot wound near his left shoulder blade. Blood was pouring out in thick, dark pulses. "You're bleeding out, Lorenzo! I need to call an ambulance!"
"No!" Lorenzo roared, his hand shooting up and gripping her forearm with terrifying strength, his dark eyes snapping open. "No doctors! No hospitals! If the Falco family knows I'm hit... they will attack this house. Do you understand me? You treat me here!"
Clara looked at his wound, then at his face. The bullet was lodged deep near his collarbone, missing his main artery by millimeters. He was losing blood rapidly; if she didn't stop the bleeding and extract the bullet now, he would go into hemorrhagic shock within ten minutes.
"Okay," Clara said, her voice instantly dropping into the calm, clinical authority of a trauma nurse. "Okay. Look at me, Lorenzo."
Lorenzo looked at her through the haze of agony.
"I need you to let go of my arm," she said firmly, her voice quiet and absolute. "I am going to save your life. But you have to let me work."
Lorenzo’s grip relaxed. He released her arm, his heavy head falling back onto the pillow.
Clara moved with blistering, photographic precision. She snapped on sterile gloves, prepared a syringe of local anesthetic, poured antiseptic over his shoulder, and prepped a tray of surgical instruments.
"This is going to hurt," Clara warned, holding the scalpel over the wound. "I don't have time for a full nerve block."
"Just do it," Lorenzo gritted out through his teeth.
Clara made a small, precise incision to widen the opening. Lorenzo’s entire body went rigid, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the metal edges of the table, a low, guttural growl escaping his throat.
Clara didn't flinch. Her hands were rock-solid. She inserted the surgical forceps, locating the metallic resistance of the bullet near his bone. With one swift, smooth motion, she extracted the lead fragment and dropped it into a silver tray. It clinked sharply against the metal.
"Bullet's out," Clara breathed out, immediately applying pressure with sterile gauze.
She picked up the suture needle, her fingers flying with breathtaking speed as she closed the ragged wound with clean, tight stitches. She cleaned the surrounding skin, applied a heavy pressure bandage, and hooked an intravenous bag of saline into his arm to restore his fluids.
Throughout the twenty-minute procedure, Lorenzo didn't make another sound. He lay there, his dark eyes fixed entirely on Clara’s face—watching the intense focus, the absolute bravery, and the incredible skill of the woman who was holding his life in her hands.
When she finished, Clara pulled off her bloody gloves and threw them into the bin. She wiped the sweat from her forehead with her sleeve, her shoulders slumping as the adrenaline finally left her system.
She looked down at Lorenzo. His breathing had stabilized, the color slowly returning to his face.
"You're going to live, Mr. Moretti," Clara whispered, her voice shaking slightly.
Lorenzo slowly sat up, resting his back against the wall. He looked down at the neat, clean bandage on his shoulder, then up at Clara.
"You didn't hesitate," Lorenzo said softly, his deep voice rich with awe. "You didn't shake once."
"I told you," Clara said, sitting down heavily on a stool beside the table. "I was good at my job."
Lorenzo reached out with his uninjured right hand. He wrapped his fingers around hers, pulling her gently toward him until she was standing between his knees.
"You are incredible, Clara," Lorenzo whispered, his dark eyes burning with an intense, raw emotion he could no longer hide. "I have surrounded myself with soldiers, lieutenants, and killers my entire life. But you... you are stronger than all of them."
Clara stared at him, her heart hammering against her ribs. The danger, the blood, the quiet intensity of the room—everything faded away until there was only Lorenzo.
"I was terrified," Clara admitted softly. "I thought I was going to lose you."
Lorenzo’s hand moved up to the back of her neck, his thumb resting gently against her jaw line. He pulled her down slowly, his eyes searching hers for permission.
"You won't lose me, Clara," he murmured against her lips. "Never."
May you like
He kissed her.
It was not a cold, aggressive kiss. It was deep, fierce, and filled with a desperate, overwhelming passion that shattered every boundary between them. Clara let out a soft sigh, her fingers tangling into his dark hair, kissing him back with equal intensity, giving herself up to the wild, dangerous storm of Lorenzo Moretti.
