Chapter 7 - The Shadow Within the Walls

The ballroom descended into controlled chaos, but under Mateo’s brutal direction, the estate was locked down instantly. No one was allowed to leave. Every exit was sealed, every server detained, and every security tape impounded.
Within forty-five minutes, the source of the poison was uncovered.
It wasn't an external assassin from Portland. It was Marcus Henderson—Clara’s former manager at The Gilded Lily.
Marcus had been paid half a million dollars by a rogue faction of the Falco syndicate to infiltrate the event as a master of catering services. Bitter over his dismissal from the restaurant and desperate for cash, Marcus had personally spiked the bottle of sparkling water intended specifically for Lorenzo’s personal tray.
In the private holding room beneath the estate, Marcus was pinned against the stone wall by two massive guards. He was sobbing hysterically, his face bruised and bloody.
Lorenzo walked into the room slowly. He had changed out of his tuxedo into a simple black coat. His face was a mask of death—unforgiving, absolute, and devoid of any human pity.
Clara stood near the entrance, accompanied by Mateo. She didn't want to witness violence, but Lorenzo had insisted she stay by his side.
"Please!" Marcus wept, shaking uncontrollably. "Please, Mr. Moretti! I was forced into it! They threatened my family! They offered me half a million dollars!"
Lorenzo stopped two feet from him. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't draw a weapon. He simply looked at Marcus with cold, terrifying disgust.
"You tried to murder me in my own home," Lorenzo said quietly, his voice like grinding stones. "And you used the very thing Clara used to save my mother to carry out your filth."
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" Marcus shrieked. "Clara! Tell him! Clara, please help me! You know me!"
Clara looked at Marcus—the man who had humiliated her, fired her for saving a life, and then attempted to murder the man she loved.
"You chose this path, Marcus," Clara said softly, her voice cold and devoid of pity. "You tried to kill a man for money. You have to answer for it."
Lorenzo didn't waste another second. He turned his back on Marcus, looking at Mateo.
"Take him away," Lorenzo commanded flatly. "Ensure he is delivered to the federal authorities with enough evidence to keep him in a high-security prison for the rest of his natural life. Let him rot in the dark."
"Yes, Boss," Mateo replied, dragging the wailing man out of the room.
Lorenzo walked over to Clara. He reached out, wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her tightly against his chest, burying his face in her hair.
"It's over," Clara whispered, wrapping her arms around his broad shoulders. "It's finally over, Lorenzo."
"I was almost gone, Clara," Lorenzo choked out against her neck, holding her as if she were the only anchor keeping him tied to the earth. "If you hadn't smelled that water... if you hadn't acted..."
"I will always protect you, Lorenzo," Clara promised, kissing his jawline. "Just like you protect me."
May you like
Lorenzo pulled back slightly, looking deeply into her hazel eyes.
"Tomorrow," Lorenzo said, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. "Tomorrow, everything changes."
