Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Glass

Two weeks passed after the night of the gunshot wound.

The victory over the Falco family had been decisive. With Lorenzo back on his feet—his wound healing cleanly under Clara’s meticulous care—the Moretti syndicate had completely crushed the Portland threat, securing total control over the northwest shipping lanes.

The estate had returned to a state of quiet luxury, but the atmosphere between Clara and Lorenzo had changed completely.

They were no longer boss and employee. They shared late-night conversations in the library, quiet morning walks through the gardens, and intense, secret moments stolen behind closed doors. Lorenzo treated her not as a subordinate, but as his absolute equal—a woman whose opinion he sought on matters both private and personal.

Isabella watched their growing bond with quiet, immense joy.

However, three weeks after Clara had arrived at the estate, a grand celebration was arranged at the mansion to mark Isabella’s total recovery and the end of the conflict with Portland. Over three hundred guests were invited—Seattle’s elite, high-ranking politicians, foreign diplomats, and senior family Capos.

The main ballroom was a glittering vision of gold, crystal, and black silk. Live classical music floated through the room, and silver trays of champagne were passed among the wealthy patrons.

Clara looked breathtaking. Isabella had insisted on buying her a custom emerald-green silk evening gown that hugged her curves perfectly, complementing her dark hair and bright hazel eyes.

As Clara stood near the grand staircase, Lorenzo walked over to her, dressed in a sharp black tuxedo. He held two crystal glasses of sparkling water.

"You are the most beautiful woman in this room," Lorenzo whispered in her ear, his hand sliding smoothly around her waist.

Clara smiled, leaning into his touch. "You look quite handsome yourself, Mr. Moretti."

Lorenzo handed her one of the crystal glasses. "A toast. To my mother’s health... and to the night you stepped into my life."

They clinked their glasses softly. Clara raised the glass to her lips, taking a small sip of the cold sparkling water.

Suddenly, her medical instincts—sharpened by years of studying pharmacology—triggered a massive alarm bell in her brain.

The water had a strange, microscopic bitter aftertaste. It was almost undetectable, masked by the carbonation, but to someone who knew chemical compounds, it was unmistakably wrong.

Potassium cyanide.

Clara’s eyes went wide with pure terror.

She turned her head instantly. Lorenzo was raising his own glass to his lips, preparing to take a deep drink.

"Lorenzo, NO!" Clara screamed.

With violent, frantic speed, Clara slammed her hand against Lorenzo’s glass.

CRASH!

The crystal glass shattered against the marble floor, sparkling water and sharp shards exploding across the polished tile.

The music stopped instantly. The entire ballroom fell into a terrified, dead silence. Three hundred eyes swung toward the center of the room.

Lorenzo froze, looking down at his bleeding hand where a stray shard of crystal had cut him, then back up at Clara in total shock.

"Clara?" Lorenzo asked, confused and stunned. "What are you doing?"

"Don't drink it!" Clara gasped out, her chest heaving, her face as white as a sheet. "It's poisoned!"

A collective gasp echoed across the room.

Mateo and four senior security guards drew their silenced sidearms instantly, forming a tight protective circle around Lorenzo and Clara.

"Poisoned?" Lorenzo repeated, his voice dropping into a dark, terrifying register.

Clara dropped to her knees, completely ignoring her expensive silk dress touching the floor. She picked up a heavy linen napkin from a nearby table, carefully dabbing up a pool of the spilled water from the floor, and sniffed it cautiously from an inch away.

"Bitter almonds," Clara rasped, looking up at Lorenzo with pure horror in her eyes. "It’s a high-concentration cyanide compound. If you had swallowed that water, your heart would have stopped in less than thirty seconds."

Lorenzo stared at the wet pool on the floor.

Then, he slowly lowered his gaze to Clara.

The realization swept over him like an avalanche. For the second time in three weeks, this woman—this broke, brave waitress whom he had once tried to dismiss with a stack of cash—had stepped between him and death.

Lorenzo felt his knees go weak.

The most feared man in the Pacific Northwest—a man who had never bowed to any rival, who had never shown fear in front of an army—slowly dropped to his knees right there on the ballroom floor in front of three hundred horrified guests.

He took Clara’s trembling hands in his, pressing them against his chest.

His hands were shaking violently. The cold, impenetrable king of Seattle was on his knees, weeping silent, terrified tears of gratitude.

"Clara..." Lorenzo choked out, his voice breaking completely. "My God... Clara..."
