Chapter 8 - The Contract Rewritten

The morning after the poisoned glass incident, the Seattle skyline was bathed in bright, clear autumn sunlight. The rain had finally stopped, leaving the city fresh and vibrant.

Clara sat in the estate's sunroom with her mother, Sarah Vance.

Sarah looked incredible. Her skin had recovered its healthy color, her energy had returned, and the doctors at Swedish Hospital had confirmed that morning that a matching kidney had been secured for her transplant surgery scheduled for next month.

"He's a good man, Clara," Sarah said gently, stroking her daughter’s hand as they looked out over the sparkling waters of Lake Washington. "I know who he is. I know the world he comes from. But the way he looks at you... he looks at you like you are his entire world."

"He is, Mom," Clara smiled, tears of happiness welling in her eyes. "He really is."

The sunroom doors opened, and Isabella walked in, looking radiant in a cream-colored dress, followed closely by Lorenzo.

Lorenzo wore a dark blue tailored suit. He carried a leather folder in his hand. He walked over to Clara, his dark eyes filled with a quiet, profound nervous energy that Clara had never seen in him before.

"Sarah," Lorenzo said respectfully, bowing his head slightly to Clara’s mother. "Mrs. Vance."

"Lorenzo," Sarah smiled warmly.

Lorenzo turned to Clara. "Walk with me into the garden?"

Clara stood up, taking his offered arm. They walked out onto the stone terrace, descending the grand steps into the quiet beauty of the rose gardens.

They walked in silence until they reached the marble fountain at the center of the grounds. Lorenzo stopped, turning to face her.

He opened the leather folder, pulling out a official document bearing the seal of Moretti Maritime and Development.

"What's this?" Clara asked, tilting her head.

"This is an official endowment," Lorenzo explained softly. "I have purchased the building that housed the old Seattle Community Health Clinic. I have funded a fifty-million-dollar grant to convert it into the Sarah Vance Emergency Trauma and Care Center."

Clara gasped, covering her mouth with both hands. "Lorenzo... what?"

"It will be a state-of-the-art facility providing free emergency surgical care and dialysis to anyone in the city, regardless of their ability to pay," Lorenzo continued, his voice filled with intense pride. "And the board of directors has reserved the position of Chief Administrative Director for you... once you complete your nursing degree."

"Lorenzo... this is... this is millions of dollars," Clara stammered, tears streaming down her face. "Why would you do this?"

"Because three weeks ago, you taught me a lesson I will never forget," Lorenzo said, stepping closer and cupping her face in his hands. "You taught me that some things in this world are priceless. You taught me that true power isn't about how many men you command or how much money you have in the bank. It's about protecting the innocent and giving life to those who have no hope."

He reached into his jacket pocket.

Lorenzo Moretti—the most feared, powerful man in the Pacific Northwest—dropped down onto one knee in the middle of the rose garden.

He pulled out a small black velvet box, snapping it open. Inside rested a magnificent, flawless ten-carat emerald-cut diamond ring that caught the autumn sunlight, glowing with brilliant light.

"Clara Vance," Lorenzo said, his voice trembling with raw, deep love. "You saved my mother. You saved my life. You brought light into a house that was built of shadows. I don't want to buy your time. I don't want to hire your hands. I want to give you my heart, my name, and my empire."

He looked up into her hazel eyes, his dark face filled with absolute devotion.

"Will you marry me?"

Clara looked at the ring, then at the man kneeling before her—the man who had dropped his cold mask to love her with everything he had.

May you like

"Yes!" Clara sobbed happily, dropping to her knees beside him in the grass. "Yes, Lorenzo! A thousand times yes!"

Lorenzo let out a triumphant laugh, sliding the diamond ring onto her finger. He pulled her into his arms, lifting her off the ground as he kissed her deeply, their joyous laughter echoing through the blooming rose garden.
