Chapter 2 - Shadows over Bay Seven

The sterile smell of antiseptic filled Bay Seven as Naomi quickly prepped Lorenzo’s wound. The cut across his left flank was deep, clean, and bleeding steadily—the signature mark of a combat blade. Yet, Lorenzo didn't flinch as she cleaned the injury with iodine. His gaze remained locked on Naomi, watching the steady, skillful movement of her hands.
"You didn't hesitate," Lorenzo observed softly, his deep voice cutting through the quiet hum of the ER monitors. "Most people hesitate when they realize what a man like Marcus is capable of."
"Hesitation kills people in my line of work," Naomi replied, threading a curved needle with black suture thread. "And I don't care who he claims to work for. A cowards who abuses a woman is still just a coward."
"A noble stance," Lorenzo murmured, a subtle flicker of admiration in his dark eyes. "But honorable stances often attract dangerous enemies. Marcus isn't just a low-level thug, Naomi. The Vanguard Syndicate operates deep within the city's infrastructure. They have judges, police captains, and politicians on their payroll. By calling him out publically, you’ve placed a target on your back."
Naomi paused, her fingers holding the forceps steady above his skin. She looked directly into his eyes. "Are you telling me I should have let him drag her out of here?"
"No," Lorenzo said, his tone darkening with an intense, quiet power. "I'm telling you that you're going to need someone who knows how to fight monsters in the dark. Because starting tonight, you aren't just a nurse anymore. You're the key witness against an empire."
Before Naomi could answer, the curtain of Bay Seven was yanked open. Dr. Patterson stood there, his face pale as chalk, holding a desk phone handset.
"Naomi," Patterson stuttered, his voice trembling violently. "It's... it's the Chief of Staff. And the precinct captain. They just called. They ordered us to release Marcus Reed immediately without charges."
Naomi’s blood ran cold. "What? He almost killed Elise! She has a fractured wrist and a concussion!"
"They said... they said if we press charges, the hospital's funding will be pulled by sunrise," Patterson stammered, refusing to make eye contact with Lorenzo. "They’re writing it up as an unfortunate domestic accident. Reed’s lawyer is already downstairs with two officers."
"See?" Marcus’s mocking voice echoed from the hallway outside. He had been helped up by two officers who had just arrived, his face twisted in a smug, victorious sneer. "I told you, bitch. You don't touch me. You're just a filthy little nurse, and she's just my property."
Elise shrank back into her wheelchair, curling into a ball of sheer despair. The brief flicker of hope in her eyes was completely snuffed out.
Naomi gripped the tray so hard her knuckles turned white. Anger, hot and blinding, surged through her veins. "This is insane! We have photographic evidence! We have medical reports!"
"It doesn't matter, Naomi," Patterson squeaked. "Please... just let them go."
Lorenzo slowly sat up from the examination table, ignoring Naomi’s gentle attempt to stop him. He swung his legs over the edge, his bare, muscled chest gleaming with sweat and blood. He looked past Patterson, straight at Marcus and the two police officers standing in the doorway.
"In my city," Lorenzo said softly, the temperature in the room dropping to sub-zero, "justice is sometimes delayed by corrupt men. But it is never denied."
He pulled out a secure satellite phone from his coat pocket, dialed a three-digit speed dial, and placed it to his ear.
"Matteo," Lorenzo commanded smoothly into the phone. "Block every exit of St. Catherine’s Hospital. Bring thirty men. Tell Captain Vance that his precinct is officially under lockdown by the Rossi family. And locate the apartment of one Marcus Reed. I want his ledger, his hard drives, and every piece of evidence he holds on the Vanguard Syndicate within twenty minutes."
The two police officers in the hallway froze, recognizing the terrifying weight behind that command. One of them immediately reached for his radio, but Lorenzo’s eyes locked onto him with lethal intensity.
"Try it," Lorenzo warned calmly. "And see how long your commissioner keeps his pension."
The officer’s hand trembled and slowly fell away from his radio.
Lorenzo turned back to Naomi, his expression softening just a fraction. "Finish my sutures, Nurse Vale. We have a war to plan, and I prefer not to bleed through my suit while tearing down an empire."

Naomi looked at the powerful billionaire mafia don, then at the terrified girl in the wheelchair, and finally at her own trembling hands. The safe, predictable world she had known for twelve years was gone, shattered in a single night of courage. But as she picked up the needle again, she realized she wasn't afraid.
For the first time in her life, she had an ally who possessed the power to make the monsters afraid.
