Chapter 4 - The Ledger of the Damned

The Rossi Manor was a sprawling fortress of marble, stone, and cutting-edge security technology nestled in the mist-covered hills overlooking the bay. For the next twenty-four hours, the estate transformed into a command center. While Elise rested under the care of specialized physical therapists and counselors in the west wing, Naomi found herself sitting in Lorenzo’s private study, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and glowing computer monitors.

Matteo had delivered the physical ledger—a thick, leather-bound notebook smelling faintly of stale tobacco and cheap cologne. Alongside it were decrypted hard drives extracted from Marcus’s safe.

Naomi pulled on blue nitrile gloves, treating the ledger like a piece of vital surgical evidence. She opened the yellowed pages, her eyes scanning line after line of horrifying entries.

"Name: Sarah Jenkins. Age: 21. Status: Delivered. Price: $45,000," Naomi read aloud, her voice tight with suppressed rage. "They treated human beings like line items on an inventory spreadsheet."

Lorenzo stood by the grand fireplace, pouring two glasses of amber liquid. He walked over and set a glass of mineral water near her hand, opting not to offer alcohol while she worked.

"Julian Vance took over the Vanguard Syndicate six months ago after his father suffered a stroke," Lorenzo explained, his deep voice filled with disgust. "Dante Vance was a thief and a smuggler, but he had boundaries. Julian has none. He lacks his father’s intelligence, replacing it with pure cruelty."

"He’s hosting an auction tomorrow night," Naomi said, looking up from the pages. "According to these entries, the location is the abandoned Blackwood Grain Silo down at Pier 42."

"A location surrounded by water, with only two terrestrial entry points," Lorenzo noted, leaning over her shoulder to examine the map printed beside the entry. His close proximity sent a strange, warm shiver down Naomi’s spine. She could smell his cologne—a subtle blend of sandalwood, rain, and expensive tobacco.

"It’s a fortress," Lorenzo continued, unaware of her brief distraction. "Julian will have at least fifty armed guards. And if he suspects for a second that Marcus was compromised, he will execute the women and burn the evidence before my men can penetrate the perimeter."

"Then you can't hit it from the outside with force," Naomi realized, her medical mind analyzing the tactical problem like an emergency triage. "You need a distraction. Something that opens the doors from the inside before the shooting starts."

Lorenzo looked at her, impressed. "You think like a strategist, Naomi."

"I think like an ER nurse," she corrected gently. "When a patient is choking, you don't cut their throat open immediately. You clear the airway from within."

"And what airway do you suggest we clear?"

Naomi pointed to a specific name in the ledger. "Look at this entry. 'Dr. Arthur Vance - Medical clearance examiner.' Julian has a physician on site to verify that the victims are 'fit' before they are presented to the buyers."

Lorenzo’s eyes flared with sudden understanding. "A medical team. They bring in external staff to handle emergency sedations and checkups."

"And those medical teams need nurses," Naomi said, her chin lifting with quiet determination. "I can get inside."

"Absolutely not," Lorenzo snapped, his voice instantly turning icy. He slammed his hand onto the mahogany desk, the sudden violence of the gesture making the crystal glasses ring. "I will not send a civilian into a nest of vipers."

"I am not asking for your permission, Lorenzo," Naomi replied, standing up to face him directly, refusing to back down an inch. "I know how to spot medical distress. I can slip sedatives into their guards' rations, unlock the holding pens, and ensure those women are ready to evacuate the moment your men breach the doors. If you go in with heavy weapons alone, innocent people will die in the crossfire!"

Lorenzo stared at her, his jaw clenching. He was used to capos, politicians, and ruthless crime lords trembling in his presence. Yet this nurse, dressed in borrowed loungewear with her hair tied back in a simple clip, stood toe-to-toe with him without a hint of fear.

"If anything happens to you..." Lorenzo began, his voice surprisingly raw, revealing a deep, protective instinct he hadn't felt in years.

"Nothing will happen to me," Naomi said softly, placing a hand gently over his forearm, right above his bandage. "Because I know you’ll be right behind me."

Lorenzo looked down at her hand on his arm, then back into her warm, brown eyes. A profound shift occurred between them in that quiet moment—a unspoken bond born in fire and forged in mutual respect.

"Matteo," Lorenzo called out without breaking eye contact with Naomi.

printable The large lieutenant stepped into the room immediately. "Yes, Don Rossi?"

"Prepare the tactical gear. Nurse Vale is coming with us tomorrow night. And assemble the entire strike team. If a single hair on her head is harmed, I want Pier 42 leveled to the ground."
