Chapter 6 - The Breach

Inside the humid, windowless basement room were six large steel animal cages. Inside them sat over thirty young women, huddled together on cold concrete, bruised, terrified, and shivering in thin cotton garments.

As the door opened, several women gasped, shrinking back into the shadows, expecting another round of cruelty.

"Shh! It’s okay! Please, stay quiet!" Naomi whispered urgently, stepping inside and pulling off her medical kit. She drew a pair of heavy bolt cutters from the bottom of the case. "My name is Naomi. I’m a nurse. I’m here to get you out."

A young girl near the front, no older than nineteen, looked up through swollen eyes. "Is... is this a trick?"

"No trick," Naomi said fiercely, positioning the bolt cutters over the padlock of the first cage. "There are people outside right now who are going to destroy the men who did this to you. I need you all to stay calm and follow me when the lights go out."

Naomi pressed a small red button on a device concealed in her pocket.

Three hundred yards away, sitting in the darkness of a command vehicle, Lorenzo saw a green light flash on his monitor.

"The beacon is active," Lorenzo announced into his comms. His voice turned into liquid ice. "Execute Phase One. Kill the power. Leave no one standing."

Instantly, a series of muffled explosions rocked the exterior of Pier 42 as Rossi snipers blew out the main power transformers. The entire grain silo was plunged into pitch-black darkness.

Screams of confusion echoed from the upper floors as emergency sirens began to blare.

"What the hell is happening?!" a guard shouted down the hallway near the holding pens.

Inside the basement, Naomi snapped the third padlock just as heavy footsteps rushed down the corridor. She reached into her kit, pulled out a tactical night-vision visor Lorenzo had insisted she carry, and strapped it over her eyes.

The steel door burst open. Three Vanguard thugs rushed in, handguns raised, blinding flashlights cutting through the dust.

"Hey! The nurse is breaking them out! Kill her!"

Before the thug could pull his trigger, the shadows behind him seemed to come alive.

A sleek black blade flashed through the darkness. The lead thug collapsed with a severed carotid artery. Before the other two could turn, Lorenzo Rossi materialized from the gloom like an ancient god of vengeance. He caught one guard by the throat, slamming him into the concrete wall with bone-shattering force, while simultaneously drawing his suppressed pistol and firing two precise shots into the third guard's chest.

It was over in three seconds. Methodical, lethal, and absolute.

Lorenzo stood in the dim emergency lighting, his breathing completely steady, his dark eyes sweeping the room until they landed on Naomi.

He stepped over the fallen guards, marching straight to her. He reached out, his gloved hand tenderly cupping the back of her neck, pulling her close to inspect her face.

"Are you hurt?" he asked, his voice rough with an intense, uncharacteristic anxiety.

"I’m fine, Lorenzo," Naomi breathed, her heart racing not from fear, but from the overwhelming power of his presence. "The women are all safe. The locks are cut."

Lorenzo breathed a visible sigh of relief, his thumb gently brushing her cheekbone before he released her. He turned to his lieutenant. "Matteo! Escort these women to the medical transport vans at the rear dock. Secure the perimeter."

"Understood, Don Rossi!"

"What about Julian Vance?" Naomi asked, watching Lorenzo check the magazine of his sidearm.

Lorenzo’s mouth curved into a terrifyingly beautiful, dark smile. "Julian is upstairs, attempting to flee with his highest-paying clients. It’s time I collected my debt."

"I'm coming with you," Naomi said, grabbing a discarded flashlight.

Lorenzo looked at her, seeing the unwavering fire in her eyes. He knew better than to try and stop her now. "Keep behind me, Nurse Vale. And don't look away—you wanted to see how I finish a war."
