Chapter 3 - The Safehouse

By 4:00 AM, the emergency department of St. Catherine’s was enveloped in a heavy, unnatural silence. Outside the tinted glass doors, four sleek, black armored SUVs idling in the rain signaled that Lorenzo Rossi’s word was absolute law. Marcus Reed had been quietly whisked away not by the police, but by Lorenzo’s second-in-command, a towering Italian man named Matteo with a scarred neck and eyes like flint.
Naomi finished applying the sterile bandage to Lorenzo’s ribs, tying off the last knot with precision.
"You're set," she said softly, wiping her hands with an alcohol swab. "No heavy lifting for two weeks. But knowing your line of work, that’s probably an impossible prescription."
Lorenzo straightened his tailored shirt, wincing slightly, though his face remained a mask of discipline. "I’ll follow the doctor's orders—provided the doctor stays close enough to enforce them."
Naomi looked up, meeting his intense gaze. "What do you mean?"
"Marcus Reed was small fry, Naomi. A mid-level collector," Lorenzo explained, standing up to his full height. He towered over her, radiating a quiet, absolute presence. "The men above him—the leaders of the Vanguard Syndicate—now know that a nurse at St. Catherine’s broke their chain of command. By morning, your name, your address, and your routine will be on every hit list in the underworld. You cannot go back to your apartment."
"My life is here," Naomi protested, though her heart pounded. "My job, my patients..."
"Your life won't exist if you walk out those doors alone," Lorenzo said firmly, though his voice bore a gentle undertone of genuine concern. "Elise is already being transported to my private estate in the hills, where my personal medical team and security detail will oversee her recovery. I suggest you come with us."
Naomi looked toward Bay Seven's doorway. She thought of her quiet, lonely apartment, her mundane routine, and the sudden, explosive reality that she had just poked a sleeping dragon. Then she looked at Lorenzo. Despite his reputation as a ruthless mob boss, he had bled tonight to defend two defenseless women.
"Alright," she agreed softly. "On one condition."
Lorenzo raised an eyebrow. "I am not accustomed to conditions, Nurse Vale. But go on."
"I am not a damsel in distress," Naomi stated, her eyes burning with resolve. "If I come with you, I don't just hide in a golden cage. I help you bring these bastards down. I know medical forensics. I know how to document injuries that stand up in court, or whatever court you answer to. And I won't let Elise face this alone."
A rare, authentic smile broken across Lorenzo’s dark features. It changed his entire countenance, revealing a devastatingly handsome man beneath the brutal exterior. "Agreed, Nurse Vale. Though I suspect you'll find my version of 'court' far more effective than the legal system."
Half an hour later, the convoy sliced through the rain-slicked streets of the city, moving toward the grand, gated estate perched high in the northern cliffs. Naomi sat in the plush leather back seat of the lead SUV, seated beside Lorenzo. Across from them, Elise was fast asleep, exhausted by trauma and sedatives.
Lorenzo’s satellite phone buzzed. He answered it, putting it on speaker at a low volume.
"Don Rossi," Matteo’s rough voice came through the speaker. "We secured Reed’s apartment. The idiot didn't even burn his files. We found the ledger."
Lorenzo leaned forward, his eyes sharpening. "What's in it?"
"It’s worse than we thought, boss," Matteo reported, his tone grim. "It’s a fully operational human trafficking pipeline run by Julian Vance—Dante’s son. They have over forty women listed in the current rotation, hidden across three dark warehouses in the docks district. And Don Rossi... there’s a VIP auction scheduled for tomorrow night."
Naomi gasped, covering her mouth. "Forty women?"
Lorenzo’s jaw set into hard granite. His knuckles turned white against his knee. "Are there names in that ledger, Matteo?"
"Yes, sir. Names, dates, origins... and a list of high-profile buyers. Judges, councilmen, high-ranking police officials. The very men who tried to kill the charges against Marcus Reed tonight."
Lorenzo slowly turned his head to look at Naomi. The cold, lethal killer was back in his eyes, but when he spoke to her, his voice remained astonishingly soft.
"It seems your instincts were correct, Naomi," Lorenzo said softly. "Marcus Reed was indeed just the first name on a very long list."
May you like
"Then we cross out every single one of them," Naomi said, her fear completely swallowed by a fiery surge of righteous anger.
Lorenzo stared at her for a long moment, deeply moved by her courage. "Welcome to the war, Nurse Vale."
