Chapter 2 - The Serpent's Ledger

The private office adjoining Matteo’s suite was lined with dark leather and illuminated by the soft glow of three high-definition monitors. Outside, the Pacific Ocean raged against the ship’s hull, but inside, the room was silent save for the rapid clicking of Lena’s fingers across the mechanical keyboard.

It was 2:00 AM. A cup of black coffee sat untouched beside her elbow.

Matteo stood behind her chair, one hand resting on the back of her leather seat, leaning in close enough that Lena could smell the clean scent of rain and bay rum on his skin.

"Look at these transactions," Lena pointed to a series of wire transfers highlighted in red on the left screen. "These aren't standard offshore diversions. Arthur Russo wasn't just hiding his own bankruptcy. He was using your family’s logistics network to siphon funds out of the Russo-Romano joint foundation."

"How much?" Matteo asked, his jaw tightening.

"Eighteen million dollars over the last six months," Lena replied, pulling up a secondary spreadsheet. "He set up a series of shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands under the name 'Coronet Holdings.' But look at the signature authority on the secondary accounts."

Matteo leaned closer, his chest almost brushing her shoulder. "Vivien."

"She wasn't just an innocent daughter being used as a bargaining chip in a political marriage," Lena said, turning her head to look up at him. Their faces were inches apart. "Vivien was managing the ledger. She was the one transferring the stolen capital into private accounts before the wedding contract could be executed."

Matteo’s amber eyes held hers for a long, heavy moment. For a man whose name struck fear into the highest corridors of power from Seattle to Shanghai, his gaze was remarkably warm when focused entirely on her.

"When Vivien accused you on Deck Eleven," Matteo murmured, "she thought you were an easy target. A maid with no leverage, no influence, and no voice."

"People like Vivien look straight through people like me," Lena said quietly, a shadow of old pain crossing her face. "They think a uniform makes you deaf and blind."

"They were foolish," Matteo said, his voice dropping into a low, resonant register. He reached out, his long, calloused fingers gently brushing a stray lock of dark hair away from her temple. "You are the sharpest person on this ship, Lena."

A soft flush warmed Lena’s cheeks. She cleared her throat, turning her attention quickly back to the monitors to hide the sudden flutter in her chest. "We... we have a problem with the secondary encryption key. Arthur Russo locked the primary server from his stateroom before your security team detained him."

"Can you bypass it?"

"Not from this terminal," Lena said, leaning back. "The local bypass requires physical access to the hard drive inside the main communications room on Deck Four."

Matteo stood up straight, pulling a silver hand-radio from his pocket. "Deck Four is currently secured by Russo’s private security detail. They realized an hour ago that the marriage deal is dead, and they're preparing to dock in Vancouver to move the hard drives off the ship."

"Then we have about two hours before we lose the paper trail forever," Lena said, standing up from her desk.

Matteo looked down at her navy uniform, then reached into his jacket, pulling out a master security badge stamped with the golden Romano crest. He pinned it gently to the lapel of her shirt.

"You're not working for housekeeping anymore, Ms. Carter," Matteo said, offering her his arm. "You're working for me."
